Well here it is...  The best and only way to get doom to run at 14.4k over
the IHHD (Internet-Head-to-Head-Daemon).  First of all, a few file sources:

IHHD 192.207.27.4:cactus.org:/pub/IHHD
S4DOOM 128.252.135.4:ftp.wustl.edu:/pub/msdos_uploads/games/doomstuff

You will have to have a good modem INIT string that works with doom.  A good
way of testing this is to get 9600 to work first over IHHD.

Then, once you've played DOOM at 9600 baud over IHHD, then you can start
fiddling with 14.4k to get a faster and smoother play action.

First, unarj s4doom*.arj into your \DOOM\ directory, if you haven't already.
Then edit sdoom.bat and search and replace all "9600"'s to "19200"'s.

Get in your comm program (Telix rules!), and change your modem settings to
be 19200,N81.  Call up your unix host and initiate an IHHD connection with
whomever you want.

Note: If you have to logon to a dialin service and then connect to your
unix server, you might have to setup your terminal settings before
connecting to your unix server.  I have to type 'terminal download' to
get it working.  You should already have to do this to get Z-Modem
downloads to work.

A good test to see if you are connected correctly with the other player
is to try to send a file about 50-100k with zmodem to the person that
is connected with you over IHHD.  A few CRC errors are expected due to
such high speeds and no hardware error correction.  However, it should
beable to get atleast halfway through.  Depending on how cheesy your
comm program is, it might abort after too many CRC errors.  My point is, if
the transfer doesn't get any blocks sent, then Doom is certainly not going
to work right.

Btw, both players must have the exact same modem settings, etc.  I.E. both
of you have to be at a locked baudrate of 19200, and connected with no
ARQ/MNP/Flow Control.

After you connect correctly with IHHD, then you exit your comm program and
change directories to your DOOM directory.  Immediately run

SDOOM m <comport#>

For example: To run it off of my modem on com1, I'd enter
SDOOM m 1

Then select netdoom at the main menu.  Select MODEM next.  Then configure
all your game defaults, and select ALREADY CONNECTED, and hit F10.  It
should work fine, unless one of you has their modem messed up, or there is
too much LAG (texas->finland), etc.  In which case you should try 9600
Baud again to see if it works.  (note: you gotta change sdoom.bat back to
9600 baud too!)  (or just not use it to run doom...)

A helpful suggestion, after you get everything working, is to change the
line in SDOOM.BAT that says: 'SETUP' to say: 'CALL MODEM.BAT'.  Then
create a MODEM.BAT that contains all your params.  I have found that this
is faster, and it works better because you can choose '-NOMONSTERS', etc.
My current MODEM.BAT is:

@echo off
sersetup -com1 -episode 3 -nomonsters -deathmatch -devparm -wart 1 8

This will set to com1, episode 3, no monsters, deathmatch, and start on e1m8.
You can just edit this bat file before you run SDOOM m #, and everything is
peachy.
