The best way to free up memory for DOOM is to boot clean. This means
booting with no autoexec.bat and no config.sys. If you are using
DOS 6.XX, you can press either the shift key or the F5 key to boot
clean.

If you require any other drivers for mouse, sound card, network, etc.,
making a boot disk that loads these drivers is recommended or if you
are using DOS 6.xx you can use a dual boot. Check the MS-DOS 6.xx
manual for details on configuring a dual boot.

Applications that impede the performance of DOOM include:
SMARTDRIVE or any other disk caching software.
EMM386 configured for EMS usage.
