Tips on the use of SubLOGIC's USA (EAST and WEST) scenery with FS5:

Installation:

After installation, be sure your FS5.INI has the following line in it:

DEVICE=G3D5SUP.FSO

Note from the documentation that you can modify the USA display in FS5
with the supplied program, SCONFIG.EXE, which will be in your FS5 directory.

Usage:

1. Be safe not sorry. Turn off crash detect. Lots of funny things happen.

2. If you are also running the EAST and/or WEST scenery in your FS4
   directory, you can save lots of disk space by issuing the following
   APPEND command before entering FS5:

   APPEND drive:path /X:ON

   where drive:path is the location of your EAST and/or WEST scenery.

   After exiting FS5, do APPEND ; to cancel the append.

   This will work only if you have *no other* .SCN or .SC1 files in your
   FS5/SCENERY subdirectory, including SAIL.SCN.

   As a matter of fact I run FS5 from a batch file which reads

   APPEND drive:path /X:ON [where I have the scenery]
   FS5
   APPEND ;

3. FS5 situation files will *not work* with EAST/WEST scenery. They can
   neither be saved nor loaded. However, .MOD files which you make with
   FS4 can be used with FS5, if they are copied into your FS5/PILOTS
   directory. I advise that you save such .MOD files in slew mode, and
   then, when you load them with FS5, lower yourself gently to the ground
   and get out of slew. You may want to have your nav1 radio tuned to a
   nearby VOR (see next paragraph). Unfortunately you can't do the reverse;
   save a .MOD file out of FS5.

4. It is rather common that you will set yourself to a certain spot known
   in advance (from QREF or other information), load EAST or WEST scenery,
   and then find that you have jumped quite a bit. This is a bug in FS5;
   same thing happens with other .SCN scenery. The answer seems to be to
   tune your nav1 radio to a nearby VOR. I have no idea why this works.

5. Do not try Spot or Tower view in FS5 with EAST/WEST loaded; it won't
   work, and may freeze your machine.

6. On occasion I have frozen my machine when going to a menu item, but this
   is variable; for example, changing planes, 10 below.

7. ASD .SC1 files work quite well with EAST/WEST and FS5, indeed somewhat
   better than with FS4, since space is limited there. Use the ordinary
   method of choosing Scenery/Scenery Library, then hit Alt-S to get to the
   menu for .SC1 files. Choose manual or automatic loading -- of .SC1s,
   that is, not scenery *disks* (see next paragraph).

8. Do not check the "automatic scenery area [disk] switching" box in the
   Scenery/Scenery library menu. It apparently takes up some memory and
   will cause certain things, such as mountains, to disappear from your
   scenery. It doesn't work anyway <G>.

9. It is extremely common to see the Big Red Box and the message "This
   scenery may not be compatible. . . ." etc. This is another FS5 bug;
   ignore it. Will come up when you first load scenery, and then,
   unfortunately, whenever you call for map/radar view.

10. I am having trouble changing planes after loading EAST or WEST. Indeed
   I have found that I have to have the plane I want in my *startup* mode
   before I can fly it with either EAST or WEST.
