FOR USE WITH DEFAULT FS4 SCENERY

This scenery for ASD is High Density and is probably only usable on a
386 platform. It is Optically Corrected to fulfill certain boundary
constraints. Two of the files, BC.SC1 and KEYWEST.SC1, are reduced by 12%
from their real world size in order to pack the essential details into the 4
mile radian of the scenery boundary. By High Density, I mean that all of the
files in this package are 4 mile radian boundary files. Lots of file swapping
going on; lots of framing going on.
This scenery was designed with purposes in mind other than arrival and
departure. It is digitized and scaled from USCGS charts, aerial photos and
County Plat books. X:Y coordinates are taken from MapInfo boundary files for
the United States. Scanned input was converted to DXF format and imported to
AutoSketch where it was overlaid with a half-mile grid and output to plotter
file format. This gridded printout was used to model the scenery in ASD with
its grid locked and set at half-mile sides.

First; I recommend that you print MAP.ASC before you read the rest of
this, and, second: delete SUMMERLA.SC1 & SUMMERLA.DY1 from storage if you have
them. There is replacement scenery in this package. The original Summerland
Key scenery is out of location by some eleven miles. Also, if you are using
the Cuba scenery by John A. Kelley, set the boundary for CUBAWEST.SC1 down to
 75 miles.
Some of these files are SEE03 affected, specifically those to the south
of the islands. It is my hope that someday, in the near future, we will be
able to routinely fly back and forth to Cuba as free men did 35 years ago.
While Havana is only 90 miles south of Key West, the glimmer of Key West from
sea, at night, is a vision I have applied to my scenery. I don't know if you
can reach a point between the two where both are visible at night. I fly from
Havana to Key West at night over and over again just to see "home" approaching
pik by pik. There is something great in this experience.
Meanwhile, the files of the landmass are not treated with SEE03 simply
because there were other details I added that filled the scenery first. If
not for the 60 K limitation, I would have added more yet. So, before flying
the Low Key scenery, set your limits to the max within ASD for static scenery.
The dynamic scenery for Key West and Boca Chica are maxed out as well.

There is only one navigation aid in this scenery, outside of dead
reckoning detail. There is a universal NRB set at 233 on your ADF dial. This
source is about one half mile north of Key West International. Navigation
lights at sea include beacons in the lighthouse at Sand Key, and American
Shoals. There is a beacon at the Looe Key marker, and a dimly lit marker
near Monkey Island, to the ESE about one half mile. This is 50A, and it is
easier to find at night than in the day. You will find other uses of Laemming
Wheeler's VLIGHTS.SC0 in this scenery, particularly at the Balloon farm on
Cudjoe and on several vessels at sea. Also just to the east of the container
ship near Sand Key Light, you will see the main shipping channel INTO Key West
marked with lit buoys, courtesy of Laemming Wheeler's library. The buoys are
accurately placed, and just visible from point to point, as they really are.

Four airports/strips are featured in this scenery. Key West
International is located on the SE corner of the island and is set at 24
degrees, 33 minutes North by 81 degrees, 46 minutes West as published in
NOAA's "U.S. TERMINAL PROCEDURES, SE VOL 3". The Boca Chica NAS, several
miles to the east, is much larger, but limited to military/government traffic.
C-5A's can land here, and Boca Chica is home to one of the famous opponent
training squadrons. A small airstrip is located near the Sugarloaf Lodge in
the middle of the Sugarloaf scenery, and smaller still is the airstrip located
on Summerland Key. I live on Summerland (the house with all of the palm trees
south of the airstrip) and I have more respect for the pilots who land here
now that I have tried to make it with my desktop Cessna.

I should point out that, due to the minimal scenery radians, you may
have to fly over an airport first before landing, in order to trigger the
scenery display; or you might want to fly out of the facility first before
landing. MAP.ASC contains locations for the boundary centers so you may
diddle with them if you like....good luck!
There are several ways to fly this scenery successfully so that it
displays as designed. Fly along the lighthouses; fly along US 1 (power poles
in view the whole way), or fly in directly from the North or South. When
flying along the northern side of these keys, the scenery changes fairly
regularly. Sugarloaf may be a problem on occasion. It is overwhelmed by Boca
Chica to the West. I think bytesize has some effect on display frequency and
 polling within ASD itself.

 POINTS OF INTEREST

In Key West, the old lighthouse at the corner of White and Roosevelt is
in place (same one found in SD-7). While not shown in the scenery, the
Hemingway house is located directly across the street, if you are planning a
trip here. Down White Street is the County Courthouse/Government Center. The
big U-shaped building a block over is the La Concha Hotel on Duval Street.
Across from the La Concha is the old Episcopal Church. North end of Duval is
the Pier House (yellow buildings) and the old Havana Dock where the ferry to
Havana used to tie up. City Electric has the red smokestacks, and Peary Court
has all of the trees. To the north of Peary Court is the BLQ, highest
building in the Keys at seven stories; and nearby is the old seaplane
hangar/pad. To the NW of the airport is Key West High.
There is not much scenery on Stock Island other than the college, the
hospital, and Mount Trashmore (our dump) with a recycle plant. There are
other notable high-profile buildings in the area, but, 60 K was on the
 horizon.
The Boca Chica file also contains the gravel pits on adjoining Rockland
Key. Big Coppitt has no buildings on it in the file. To the east of Big
Coppitt is Shark Key, so named because of its shape, as seen from the air.
The next scene over is Sugarloaf. It covers some 10 miles and contains
many polygons. Polygons, incidentally, take up the most space in these files,
but they add to the recognition factor more than any other feature, when you
are flying amongst a group of islands. There is a secret government antennae
farm in the middle of the scenery. I used windsocks as masts here, but, in
reality, there are dozens of low metal poles in the ground behind barbed wire.
This is one of several spook projects the government has in the Keys. On upper
Sugarloaf Key, to the east, is Sugarloaf Elementary School.
The only buildings on Cudjoe Key are the Sheriff's sub-station on the
west end and the Balloon Farm on the northernmost point. These balloons,
manufactured by Trojan Rubber (seriously) are used to hoist radar, cameras and
broadcast antennas. They may be raised to 14,000 feet, but are usually at the
2,000-3,000 foot mark. In my scenery, Fat Albert, as the balloons are known
to the local residents, is only riding at around 500 feet. Projecting the
tether from the ground station to the balloon's nose was a feat of rocket
science that wore me out! I could never hit it at 14,000 feet! There is a
blinking light under the balloon at night, and the balloon is
stationary...don't let it fool you into believing the wind always blows from
the East. In the scenery of the Tortugas, there is a NAVY balloon tender
which raises one of these balloons as well. The idea is to fool the
smugglers. They never know where these radar sets may be located.
Summerland Key is smaller than Cudjoe, but has a detailed layout. I
live here, and could casually construct it with accuracy. On the west end is
the Shrimp Farm where shrimp are grown. On the east end is the Niles Channel
bridge, one of two high-rise bridges in the Keys. The airstrip is bordered by
houses which have their own hangars on the ground floor. Its nothing for a
plane to drive down my street to park at a local residence.
Looe Key is a national park, and is about three miles south of
Summerland Key. Monkey Island, or Key Lois, or Loggerhead Key...whichever you
prefer, is detailed in the Looe Key scenery. The government keeps several
thousand monkeys here, which they use for experimental purposes. The island
is posted, but if you get close enough, you can see the monkeys roving about.
They have been known to swim over to Cudjoe and Summerland.
Sand Key and American Shoals are cut files of elevated lighthouses. If
you fly close enough, you can see the roof of each one. In the Sand Key
scenery there is a ship and several smaller craft. Both of these files and
 Looe Key are SEE03 files.

That's about it. Oh, one more thing... somewhere in this area, a
smuggler is making a drop. If you can find him, and it is not easy, you will
see some peculiar flying. He is known to be flying in from Cay Sal with
several small waterproof packages. Cay Sal? Where's that? Be looking for it
 on your favorite BBS.

I'll send you my scenery files of Ramrod north to Long Key bridge. This area
includes Big Pine, Bahia Honda, Marathon and its airport, to name a few, and,
I'll throw in the Tortugas, Marquesas and Fort Jefferson. Be sure to specify
disk size and density. If you would, I'd like to know where you got
 LOWKEY.ZIP also. Thanks.
Incidentally, I have two versions of this scenery. One shows rockpiles
of shipwrecks and has a reference guide keyed to the scenery itself, and the
other has no reference to the wrecks. Indicate which version you want. Some
folks are not interested in big numbers floating on their scenery.

FS4, ASD AND SEE03 ARE NOT MY TRADEMARKS, BUT I SURE DO LOVE WHAT THEY STAND
FOR. THANKS TO MICROSOFT, BAO AND LAEMMING WHEELER. ALSO THANKS GO TO JIM
ROSS FOR HIS "LEVITILT". GREAT STUFF! AutoSketch IS OWNED BY AUTODESK.
