Combat Air Patrol: He162 & Me262
Historic Relation
The He162 Volksjager was indeed a
desperate measure. However, the design
was excellent and yet still simplistic
enough so it could be produced in great
numbers.
The most likely mission for the
Salamander would be to engage Allied
fighters and leave the heavier planes to
the more capable Me262, with its lethal
firepower clustered in the nose, firing
four explosive 30mm shells in a dense
cone, compared to the Salamander's two
20mm cannon mounted in the lower
fuselage. This mission accurately
describes the role of flying escort for
the sleeker, generally faster Swallow,
therefore taking advantage of the
Volksjager's closer, tighter but less
maneuverable 'turning 'n burning'
ability.
You are in a Salamander flying at the
wing of an Me262 on a CAP mission over
southern France, when you hear the roar
of many prop engines above you.
Good luck.
