The name and sex of your character do not matter. The gypsy woman
will ask you 7 questions, based on the virtues. I don't think your answers
have a major affect on the game play. After that comes an animated intro
with the gargoyles. You can't do anything, just pay attention. Then, you
will appear before Lord British, with 3 gargoyles. Kill them by clicking
sword, then clicking on them.

After they are dead, break off combat and talk to Lord British. He
will ask you a few questions. This is the game's copy - protection scheme.
The answers are in the manual. Then, he will explain the situation. Be sure
to ask him about STONE, so you'll know how to use it. If you are ever wounded,
say HEAL to him, and he will. The key he gives you will let you lower the
drawbridge, to the south.

The first thing is to get a few party members together. Here are some
people who will join you;

Blaine, with the gypsies, in either Britain or Trinsic.

Sentri and Seggallion, both strong fighters. In Serpents Hold.

Jaana, in Yew. Oddly, she cannot use magic.

Gwenno, in Minoc (I think).

Julia, in Minoc (weak).

Katrina, in New Magincia (weak).

Sherry, in Lord British's castle. (The mouse!) She cannot fight, but is
necessary at one point. Afer that, you can ask her to LEAVE.

Leodon and Leonna, in the Buccaneers Guild.

There are probably a few more. The best weapons and armor are;

Magic armor, bought in Trinsic. Plate mail is second best, same place.

Magic helm, ditto.

Magic shield; this item is found in Serpents Hold, but you cannot just
buy it. Ask the Oriental fighter about SERPENT.

Spiked collar, Serpents Hold armory.

Hand weapon - the halberd, bought in Trinsic. Heavy but powerful, and can
attack one or two squares away. Another good weapon is the morning star,
bought at Serpents Hold. They also can attack two squares away, and you can
hold one in each hand. There are NO magic hand weapons, unless you count
the glass sword, which will kill anything, but only works once, then shatters.

Ranged weapon- the best you can buy is the magic bow. They are sold in
Britain; very expensive, but the shopkeeper will loan you one if you
cannot afford it. The boomerang is another good one; it hits and comes
back to you, and you can hold one in each hand. You cannot buy them, you
must take them from dead gargoyles.

For the VERY best ranged weapon look behind a secret door in the barracks
in serpents hold. Open the chest. Don't take what you see there, that's
stealing. However, someone must have made that... why not go ask her?
Very effective against big monsters like dragons. However, it does have
a tendency to ding party members as well.

Once you have a large, well armed party, it's time to get the
moonstones. Each moonstone is found on a altar, protected by a force field.
To lower the field, you need the rune and mantra for that shrine. The mantras
are the same as in Ultimas 4 and 5; also, someone in each town knows the
mantra of that virtue. Here are the locations of the runes...

Compassion - the young girl in the Conservatory in Britain has it. To get
it, first ask her about RUNE, then her mother (barmaid in the pub), then
her again.

Valor - behind the mousehole in the pubin Jhelom. You can't get it, but
someone else can...

Honesty - this one in tricky. Find Manrel in Moonglow, and ask him about
BEYVIN. He will give you the key to his crypt. The entrance to the catacombs
is in Xiao's place, on the north shore of the island. Pick the lock of the
door in the east wall of her bedroom. In the Catacombs, search the bodies
in the walls; they have many goodies which the game doesn't consider stealing
if you take them. One even has a glass sword! On level 2, read the signs until
you find Beyvin's crypt. Use the key on the door, search the remains, and take
ONLY the rune. If you want extra goodies, find the passage to levels 3 and 4,
where many items are stored.

Honor - on the pillar in the center of Trinsic. Just take it.

Justice - found in Yew. After a long back - and - forth between you, the
mayor, the jailor ,and the prisoner in solitary, he will reveal that the rune
is under a plant in the pub.

Sacrifice - Selganor in Minoc has it, but first you must join the artisan's
guild. Find the lumberman northwest of Yew, and buy a yew log. Then take it
to the man in the sawmill east of Minoc, and he will turn it into a board.
The go to Julia in Minoc, and she will make you a panpipe. Then ask Gwenno
about STONES, she will give you a sequence of numbers. (This is the same
sequence Kenneth gives you in U5, which is used to get the sandalwood box).
Go to Selganor, he will give you the rune.

Humility - the mayor of New Magincia has it. The most humble person in the
town is the one who says he isn't!

Spirituality - it's in the chest in Yorl/Marney's house in Skara Brae. You can
find out by asking Marney about LOCKET, then BASKET. Note - move the basket
aside instead on taking it; that would be considered stealing, even if you
give it right back. Also, almost everyone in town will have something to say
about the murder of Trenton. You can have some fun asking people questions, but
there is no way I know of to find out who did it. (It was Micheal, who lives
west on Britain, but this is not important to the game). There is also no way I
know of to communicate with the ghost. (No, Seance doesn't work). If you
find out what to say, please tell me.

To get the moonstones, go to the shrine, Stand directly south of the altar.
Use the appropriate rune, type in the appropriate mantra, take the moonstone.
From then on, you can talk to the shrine to gain levels. The shrine of valor
will give you 3 points of strength when you gain a level there. The shrine
of Honesty gives you 3 intelligence, Compassion gives 3 dexterity, and
Spirituality 1 of each. Don't gain levels at the others. Note; the shrine of
Spirituality is out in space, you must use the black stone to get there. It
is the only one not guarded by gargoyles, so hit it first.

Notes on gargoyles; you will find gargoyles guarding all shrines that have
moonstones on them, except Spirituality. There are two types; large (winged)
and small (wingless). The small ones are not two powerful, but the large
ones can take a lot of damage and can throw spells. A good tactic is to
stand close to the big ones; the explosion spells they throw will also hit
themselves! Sometimes you will find a gargoyle that seems invulnerable; you
miss every single time you attack him. Kill him with magic, with a glass
sword, or just warp out and come back. He's on silver snake venom, you'll
find out more about this later. If you kill the gargoyles, then leave
without taking the moonstone, they will be back next time.

Now, get the Dispel Field spell, and go to the Lycaeum. Dispel one of the
energy fields blocking the ladder down, and take it. This is the library.
Roam through it, reading the books on the pedestals. (Ignore the bookcases).
Take 2 of the books with you; Alice in Wonderland, and The Big Book of
Mantras. Take Alice in Wonderland to Lord British, and ask him about BOOK.
He will reward you with some gems.

Now, head for Spiritwood, west of Trinsic and north of Skara Brae. Find a
wisp and talk to it. Ask it about a SAMPLE, it will give you a spell. Move it
into your spellbook, but DON'T EVER CAST IT!!! It will kill everyone in the
whole game!! While this would take care of the gargoyle problem, there are
better ways!

Now, talk to the wisp again. If the Avatar is carrying the Big Book of
Mantras, it will offer to buy it from you. The information is useless to you,
so ask for gold. Shazam - the entire party has as many gold nuggets as it
can carry! Go to the mint in Britain and trade them for gold coins. Now, go
buy everyone top-of-the line armor and weapons (magic armor and helm, spiked
collars, and halberds, morning stars, or magic bows. See above). Buy yourself
every single spell and a pile of reagents.

Spells are sold by; Horance, just north of Skara Brae (borrow Yorl's skiff),
Rudyom in Cove (watch out for the drake, it will throw spells at you),
Nicodemus, east of Empath Abbey (hard to find; also sells magic staves which
let you 'lock up' a spell for later use), and Xiao, north of the Lycaeum.
Note on level 8 spells; while Rudyom will sell you Ressurect, you cannot
obtain the other level 8 spells due to a game bug. If you ask Xiao for level
8 spells, she tells you to 'talk to the wisps', but even after you do she
won't give them to you. Don't worry about it... the stone can do anything
Gate Travel can do, Eclipse is useless (as far as I know), and you can get
along without the combat spells.

Next on your agenda is the 'pirates quest'. Note; it is physically
possible to win the game without any of this, but it gives a good deal
of background info on the meaning of your quest, which, in my opinion,
makes the ending more satisfying.

Go to Mariah in the Lycaeum. Ask her about the BOOK of prophesies, (the one
that Iolo got from the gargloyle priest in the introduction). She will
tell you about a silver tablet that would let her translate from Gargoyle
to English. She has a fragment, but the rest is missing.

Go to the sewers under the castle. On level 3, there is a house. The woman
inside has a belt that you need; either kill her or cast pickpocket on her
and take the belt. If you kill her she has lots of goodies, including *3*
glass swords! The best way to kill her is to whap her with the glass sword
you found in the catacombs. A glass sword will kill ANYTHING with one blow,
then it shatters. (Note; save at least one glass sword for the end of the
game).

With the belt, go to the Buccaneers Den. Talk to Homer about the GUILD. Then,
find a secret door in the north wall of the inn. Go through it and ask Budo
about GUILD. If you have the belt he will make you a member (which will
give you bargain rates at his shop, and the one in Britain.) Talk to Homer
again, he will tell you about the treasure and the map. The 9 pieces of
the map are at...

Morchella, in the pub at Serpents hold, has a piece, but she wants a magic
serpent shield. Either give it to her or cast pickpocket on her.

There is one in the wrecked ship on an island west of Serpents Hold, guarded
by skeletons. Search the ship. There are some other wrecked ships at various
points in the game, but they have nothing.

The gypsy Arturo, just north of Trinsic, has one. At first he asks for 100
gold, but you can talk him down to 50. Incidentally, try asking the other
two gypsies about SEX. You can do it with both of them, regardless of what
sex you are... ;-)

The mayor of Trinsic has one, but you must call him by his real name. Sandy
(the cook) knows it, but he will only tell you if you give him a dragon's
egg, which are found only on level 4 of the dungeon Despise, to the NW,
guarded by a zillion dragons. Dragons can take loads of damage, can cast
some powerful spells, including flame wind, chain bolt, and summon daemon,
and are themselves immune to magic except for wing strike. To save you
the trouble, his real name is Alastor Gordon. If you do decide to go to
Despise, if you give everyone an invisibility ring (blue), you can walk
right past the dragons!

There is one on level 4 of Wrong (sail a skiff down the river to the small
lake surrounded by mountains to the NW). Ybarra has it, and will trade it
to you for some food (if you don't have any, go to a fountain and wish for
FOOD. Incidentally, your party can go through the entire adventure without
eating a bite).

The cave north of Britain, in the moutains next to the sea, and the cave
just south of Minoc both open onto the same dungeon. Go to level 3, enter
the northernmost room on the west wall, and go through a secret door on
the north wall. Beyond there is a room with some goodies and a map piece.

On the east shore of Dagger Isle, which is to the north of the Lycaeum,
lives an insane hermit. Go into his house, move stuff around until you
find the entrance to his cellar, then search around for the map. You can
also find a glass sword here. Taking anything else in the cellar is stealing.
His advice about eating grapes is useless.

In the Dry Lands, to the S-SW of the shrine of Sacrifice, is a hole in the
ground. This leads to the Ant Caves. On the 4th level, south of the queen,
is a body. Search it.

Once you have all 8 pieces, go back to Homer, he will give you the 9th. Put
the pieces on the ground and move them around until they fit together. You
can reach the island by going to the west edge of New Magincia and sailing
due south. At the island, find a patch of bare earth, and use a shovel on
the center. (Note - you can prevent yourself from being poisoned by the
swamp by equipping everyone with swamp boots, sold by Utomo in Yew. Actually
you should have done this long ago.)

Inside the pirate cave, search the bones for some goodies. The caves are very
twisty and tricky. Go left at the 'This way' sign (the traps cannot be picked
up, but can be moved aside). Go south at the next sign. Go down the hole next
to the 'Off limits' sign - you will fall in a pool of lava, so be sure the
party is in good health first. Walk south, and take the first up ladder you
see. Go to the south and take the long passage that heads west. The hole
you want is guarded by mongbats and slime. Go down it, cross the bridge, and
walk SW. Go through the passage with the 'Maze of Death' sign. Find and take
the ladder going down; you should arrive next to a sign saying 'Drop to
your death!'. Take the west passage, there will be many holes going down.
Take ONLY the one with a gold nugget nearby. After that, follow the passage
until you come to a set of poison fields. Dispel the middle set, walk north,
kill the slime, blast the door to the building with a powder keg or explosion
spell (they are interchangable - both can open doors, and both can damage
monsters, although the keg takes awhile to go off). The room beyond is chock
full of goodies! Take all you can carry. Be SURE to get; the silver tablet,
the storm cloak (when worn, NO magic will work, not even yours. Handy against
powerful critters like dragons and daemons.) and the fan (found inside a
chest, this can cast Wind Change. Comes in handy later on). Also grab the
lightning wand (does 30 damage at any range, and anyone can use it. Only so
many charges, though), the fire wand (20 damage). Use the stone to warp out.
If you promised to give Homer the storm cloak, do it. Avatars keep their
word, even to thieves.

Now go to Mariah in the Lycaeum again. Before you talk to her. look at
the picture on the Ultima box cover, and on the manual. Notice anything
different? Also, think about the subtitle of the game, 'The False Prophet'.
What do you think it all means?

Go to Mariah's office and pick up the silver fragment on the table. With
the book of prophesies, the tablet, and the fragment, ask Mariah about the
BOOK.

So THAT'S who the False Prophet is... hoo boy... looks like somebody's got
a different outlook on life than you...

Now, like Mariah says, go talk to Sin'Vraal. Zap to the shrine of Sacrifice
and walk SW. Ask him about the book, and gargoyles.

Informative, huh? Now, it's time to pay the gargoyles a visit. But before you
do, make sure you have at most 7 party members, yourself included. Iolo,
Dupre, and Shamino are with you for the duration of the quest, but anyone
else can be asked to LEAVE.

Zap to the shrine of Humility. go south, and cross the river at a shallow
point, the go NE. Enter the dungeon. The layout of levels 1 and 2 is pretty
straightforward, just find the way down and take it. On level 3, find the
room with 2 ladders going up and 1 going down. Take the one going down.
Follow the passage north, then take your first left (yes, you have to cross
the lava. You can't prevent the damage, but don't worry, it isn't too bad).
Go south, and talk to the man in the building. Find out all he knows about
the gargoyles. Be sure to ask him about LANGUAGE, and use the scoll he gives
you. Now you can speak Gargoyle! Take the passage to the NW, and take the
ladder down. Welcome to the underworld, Avatar...

Wait at the entrance to the dungeon until noon; this may require waiting
overnight. A small gargoyle will arrive; unlike the rest of the small ones,
he can talk. Have him join the party. He will give you directions to his
fathers house (essentially, go clockwise around the mountains). Do not enter
any buildings or talk to any other gargoyles. Talk to him. Then, go to the
gargoyle leader, directly NW of the hall of knowledge. Say SURRENDER, answer
all his questions with Y, then say SACRIFICE, and answer Y. He will put the
Amulet of Submission on you; you will not be able to take it off for the
rest of the game.

Now, talk to the rest of the gargoyles, especially the seer across from
the leader. Following his directions, enter the Hall of Knowledge. Read all
the books (don't take them), and take the broken lens. Then take the lens to
the glassblower to the NE, he will repair it. Now, talk to the seer again.

Now, use the moonstone to zap back to the surface. The next four things can be
done it any order. Go to the lensmaker NE of the lycaeum, and ask him about
LENS. He will make you a concave version; a glass sword is needed. This is the
reason I said to save one. If you don't have one, the glassblower in Minoc
will make one for 5 gems.

Buy a skiff at Minoc, and sail as far south as you can. Talk to the cyclopses,
and get the key from the father. Take the ladder down in the keep. Make
your way to the 4th level. This is tricky; you will have to go up and down
several times, fooling with levers and switches. Each lever operates one
particular portcullis, and each switch controls an electric field. (Note;
these are the fields that block archways, and are not the same as electric
fields, which are brought down by Dispel field). You wil need to open many
secret doors; they are a vey faint rectangle in a wall. Look carefully. Use
the key on the door on the 4th level, dispel a field, and take the cube.

Get a boat. Sail to where Blackthorn's castle was in U5, east of Serpents
Hold. The mad wizard Sutek lives there now. (In U5, he lived on the swampy
island, and told you how to defeat the Shadowlords). Exit the boat, and kill
the rabbits. ("Run away! Run away!") Blast the door. Lower the drawbridge by
casting Telekinesis on the crank. Move the sword and wall mount to the side,
and open the secret door. You get through the castle mostly by going one way,
hitting a lever or switch, then going the opposite way, killing wierd critters
the whole way. By the time you get to Sutek, it should be obvious that both
his oars are not in the water. Talk to him, and when he tells you to ask a
question, say BALLOON. Find and take the entrance to his catacombs. On the
first level, you will meet a real wierd horse, who will tell you a riddle
about which path to take. I think it's the right one. On level 3, find the
dead body. Search it and take the plans. Also in the catacombs is a barbarian
named Gorn, who will join you. He was the guy you met in U5 if you were
captured by Blackthorn's guards, who was trying to escape the dungeons. Looks
like he didn't make it...

After leaving the castle, read the plans. A shopkeeper in Paws will sell you
a coil of rope. There is a cauldron on level one of the sewers under Lord
British's castle. The basketweaver in Minoc will make you a big basket for
300 gold, if you have the plans. The bag is trickier. Get at least 50 spider
silk, and go to the shy persom in Paws, who will make it into silk thread.
Take this to Charlotte in New Magincia, who will spin it into cloth. Finally,
the tailor in Paws will make the cloth into a bag. When you have all 4 items,
give them and the plans all to one person, and use the plans. Voila!

Now, visit the 3 gargoyle shrines, which can be reached with the moonstone.
They can be visited in any order.

Control; to get past the gates, keep fiddling with the levers until you find
out which lever controls which gate. The switches control the electric fields.
Talk to the statue beyond. Hey! I killed you! Don't worry, he can't hurt you
now. Get the mantra of Control from him and write it down.

Passion; Go north, past swamp, traps, and lava, then kill the daemons. It is a
good idea to give a spellbook with dispel magic to a few other characters,
in case you get charmed. Kill will not work against them. Have a reveal
spell handy, in case they become invisible. Again, talk to the statue (I killed
you too!) and write down the mantra of Passion.

Dilligence; you are looking for a secret door in one of the cross - shaped
areas between the rooms, which leads to a ladder. Since ladders do not show
up on the overhead view, gems will not help you. The xray and wizard eye
spells are your best bet. There is a potion that cast xray, I forget which.
Wooden doors can be broken down with a heavy weapon like a halberd or morning
star, but steel doors must be lockpicked, blasted, or gone around. Magically
locked doors (the edges glow) must be deat with by the Unlock Magic spell.
After taking the ladder, talk to the statue (he used to look like a computer!)
and get the mantra of Dilligence.

After you have the 2 lenses, the cube, all 8 moonstones, the balloon, and have
talked to the 3 gargoyle shrines, it's time to win the game. Go to gargoyle
land. Just east of the entrance to the Tomb of Kings (this is north of the
sacrificial slab, in the gargoyle 'main street'. There is nothing that I
know of to be gained in the Tomb of Kings), find a silver pointer saying
'Temple of Singularity', but it points to the mountains! No problem. Drop the
balloon, enter it, and use it to fly north. The balloon can only go the way
the wind is blowing, but you can change the wind direction with a Wind Change
spell or the magic fan from the pirate cave. Land in the clearing to the
north. Enter the building, and talk to the altar. The mantra of Singularity
is the mantras of Control, Passion, and Dilligence put together. The shrine
will give you a 'sacred quest' to go to the Codex.

Use the moonstone to zap to the Isle of the Avatar. Walk north, between the
Guardians. You can get past them because you are on a quest; before this they
wouldn't have let you pass. Enter the building, and talk to the Codex.

Put each lens halfway between the Codex and the flame of the same color; if
they are placed correctly you will see rays of light shining on the Codex.
Move all 8 moonstones into the vortex cube. Put the vortex cube directly
south of the Codex. Use the cube. Shazam!

                                                           Tony Ricardi
