===More random hints for the advance Hack player===

o You need never be weakened by a potion of poison again! Before
trying any potion, use the #dip command. You will be asked what
to dip, choose any missile weapon (like your arrows). Then select
a test potion to dip into. Remember its name, because if it
disappears when you dip into it, it was poison. Also, the weapon
dipped into a poison potion gains a +1 enchantment.

o Did you know that you can throw bad potions at monsters? I haven't
actually investigated all the potions, but confusion will confuse the
      monsters, etc.

o A scare monster scroll (maniacal laughter) is very useful. You hear
the laughter when you read it because you have just wasted a powerful
weapon. When you are in trouble (i.e., 3 Umbar hulks, 4 h.p. left),
just Drop the scroll where you stand. Monsters can not hit you. So
long as you are standing on the scroll, you can hit the monsters as
you please, and they cannot hurt you. Beware that Dragons can still
breathe fire, and monsters can still throw missiles at you. If you
try to pick the scroll up again, it turns to dust. But you can Move
back onto the scroll for the same effect, but once it is dropped, it
cannot be moved. You can get the same effect by Engraving "Elbereth"
with a wand of fire. This uses one charge, but the monsters cannot
touch you, and you can hit them as you like. Unlike Engraving in
the dust, this effect is permanent. One unfortunate effect of
"Elbereth" is that the monster move around a lot, and you have to wait
for them to get within striking (or missile) range.

o Wands of polymorph can be great fun. You can turn your little dog
into a Dragon and it will still be tame. However, it still needs
food (a vampire eating tripe rations?). A cockatrice is
perhaps the best tame monster. These wands will also turn items into
other items. (e.g., rocks into gems)

o I have had the most luck as a caveman. My strategy is this: abandon
the dog (he eats all the good monsters) on level 1, kill and eat
the first leprechaun you find (drop all gold first). Then you will
be teleporting, and can rob all shops blind. Ring of teleport control
is very useful, then you can use the ^T command to teleport at will
(though beware -- this uses extra food). Work your way down, trying
to rob as many vaults as possible. On level 26 you will find
a wand of digging and a wand of wishing. The wand of wishing will be
hidden under a rock in a corner of the maze (i.e., unpushable), so
you will need to use the wand of digging (or striking or polymorph) to
get it. The wand will have 3 wishes, which means you can make 4.
After it is empty, just keep zapping it (i.e., 100z) until it says
"you wrest one last wish from the worn out wand." For the lower
levels, you will need: ring of teleport control, 3 scrolls of
teleportation, 3 potions of confusion, a ring of fire resistance
and a ring of levitation. You must have at least
one of these, or the equivalent (ate a Dragon for fire, etc.) If
you have more than one, then you can get a goodie (+3
crysknife, +3 plate mail, etc.) Never wish for beyond +3 or 3 of
any 1 item, or try to cheat by wishing for an Amulet of Yendor (cheap
plastic imitation) or wand of wishing (no charges). Then wear the
teleport control, quaff the potion of confusion (or booze), read the
teleport scroll, and you will be teleported to a level. Choose 31-35
(I think, I use 31). You will be in a maze. At its center is a
2x2 room completely walled in (no doors) also surrounded by water.
You can get over the water with levitation (or a wand of fire), and
through the wall with the wand of digging. Then kill the Wizard
of Yendor (his symbol is '1') and throw some food to his dog
(a hellhound!). Beneath the dog is the Amulet. After you get it,
you can get out by teleporting to level 0, or you go for more points
on other levels. For maximum points, collect (and identify) gems.
Hack gives points for these when you get out. There are, of course,
alternatives to almost all of these methods, but the above have
      worked for me.

o The speliologist's pick-axe is a very useful thing. I have played with
it enough to learn that, aside from making your own corridors to vaults
      and such, you can:

               - Get out of shops (just keep trying)

               - Break up rocks into 30 or so rock-weapons.

               - Dig pits or trapdoors to the next level (direction '>')
Keep digging in a pit to make a trapdoor.

The large box is a refridgerator, and will store dead monsters
without having them rot. The thing is so heavy that I just use it
as a weapon until I get something better. Any heavy object (such
as the iron ball) makes a fair weapon.
