=====================================================================
Well, they're back, and better than ever. In 1990, I released a file
called 16TEAMS.ZIP which contained 16 teams for Earl Weaver Baseball
version 1.5. Now here is a new file of 24 teams for v1.5. These
contain many of the players found in the 16TEAMS file, but with many
new additions.

As soon as Earl Weaver II is released, I will see how it handles the
file structure and release these teams for vII if neccessary.
=====================================================================

These teams were created by outputting the stats for all the players
from the 1988 stat disk and running some statistical calculations
on those data. Then each players' basic abilities were determined via
random probability. Then it was a matter of randomly calculating the
number of games the player played in and then calculate at-bats, hits,
doubles etc... based on the players' abilities and overall odds.

The names were also randomly assigned, using a database of last names
and a database of first names. There are some interesting players
names such as: James Stewart, John Forsythe and others. I took no
part whatsoever in naming players, so any person having the same name
as a player is purely coincidental.

The shortcoming of the first 16 teams was that I had to type them in
manually, and didn't plan on the vs. Left/vs. Right stats!!! EW1.5
tries to correct for this, but I kept getting the feeling that it
wasn't resulting in very accurate numbers. So I broke down the data
file and recalculated lefty-righty percentages and figured out how to
write the data files directly from my program (to the relief of my
typing fingers!!!).

The end result was 434 batters and 280 pitchers in the database.
Which could have resulted in 26-28 teams, but I felt that 24 teams, 6
teams in each of the 4 divisions made for a much easier playing
schedule. In addition, this kept teams from getting stuck with the
bottom of the barrel players just to make the minimum.

So the draft was on. Batters were ranked according to run production,
on-base percentage, and steals. Purely offensive, but I couldn't work
in the error factor. Pitchers were ranked by men on base/game, SO per
game, and runs per game.

The first 18 rounds of the draft were compulsory: At the beginning of
each round, the 24 teams were placed in a random order and then each one
took the top remaining player in the following categories:

        Round 1 - Catcher
        Round 2 - First Base
        Round 3 - Second Base
        Round 4 - Third Base
        Round 5 - Shortstop
        Round 6 - Left Field
        Round 7 - Center Field
        Round 8 - Right Field

        Round 9
            - 13 - Starting Pitchers

        Round 14 - Middle Reliever

        Round 15
            - 18 - Closer

As the draft ranking was based on offense, a player could be selected
for a position if their primary OR secondary position was the one to
be selected.

Rounds 19-24 consisted of taking the top remaining hitter in lieu of
whatever position they played.

Round 25 consisted of taking the top remaining pitcher, be he starter,
middle-man, or reliever.

This resulted in every team having at least a minimal starting
line-up, and a full pitching staff. Each team ended up with 15
batters/fielders and 10 pitchers. Some teams may have ended up with
with only one of a player in a particular fielding position, how you
handle this is up to you. If you play these guys in league, then
every player can take a team and make some trades.

I tell you, after reviewing some of the teams in a little mini-season,
there are some places where trades are necessary. I leave this to
you, because what I view as fair, someone else may not. But Andover
and Allentown each have something the other needs...desperately. And
Andover seems to be hoarding cathers, and I know a Pacific League team
that has only one.

This really may seem like a pain, but I originally planned on 16
fielders (2 per primary position) and 9 pitchers, but that really
left a weak pitching staff. It made drafting much easier, everyone
got two of everything, no glaring holes in the defense, but since a
small percentage of each team could play two-positions, that led me to
cut the sixteen down to fifteen, and add another pitcher. Also note
that players that only play at one position have that position as
their secondary position too. This came about because I hoped, in
vain, that this would solve the problem of EWBB putting fielders into
the game as pitchers. Hopefully that bug will be fixed by vII.

I did check the averages of the rankings of the players, and they were
very close to the average of all the selected players. Obviously, the
players with the worst averages ended up not getting drafted, but are
included in each division as extras. Each team is pretty balanced
with each other. A team with better pitching, may be slight weaker in
batting, and vice versa.

The TEAMS:

Their are two leagues, PACIFIC and ATLANTIC, and they are divided into
two divisions each, NORTHERN and SOUTHERN. The cities I selected are
each from a different state and have no Major League franchise, though
some do seem to have minor league clubs, but tough. I didn't check as
to whether there was enough population to support the clubs or
anything, because this is fantasy. Some personal bias went into the
selection of these cities, so if any of you reading this live in any
of these cities, I'd like to hear from you.

Pacific - Northern Pacific - Southern
        Cheyenne, Wyoming Boulder, Colorado
        Dubuque, Iowa Reno, Nevada
        Omaha, Nebraska Seagraves, Texas
        Portland, Oregon Shongaloo, LA.
        St. Paul, Minnesota Tucson, Arizona
        Tacoma, Washington Tulsa, Oklahoma

Atlantic - Northern Atlantic - Southern
        Andover, Mass. Anderson, S.C.
        Allentown, PA. Bradenton, Fla.
        Buffalo, NY. Fairmont, W.V.
        Dover, Maryland Maryville, Tenn.
        Rutland, Vermont Mobile, Alabama
        Tiffon, Ohio Norcross, Georgia (*)

* My town. But again, no bias went into the selection of players and
such...what fun would that be for me to take all the good players.

Just for convenience, each stadium name includes the state name as
well. Also, the divider for Pacific and Atlantic was the Mississippi
River.
=====================================================================

Feel free to change the name of the stadiums or teams if you wish, but
do not redistribute the teams after they have been altered. Also
included are two schedules 162 games each, for each of the leagues.
If you change the team names, then the schedules won't work, and if
you change the stadium names, then you need to make sure that the team
retains the stadium as home.
=====================================================================

One thing I learned is that the players do not always play per their
apparent stats. Some players may have a .250 average and end up
hitting .302. I like to play the games in fast stats mode to generate
a feel for how they are going to do. I won't bother mentioning what
the old guys records were, because they have all changed to new teams,
new players have come in, and the LEFTY-RIGHTY stats have been
included.

Take these players, play with them, maybe re-draft them using the
commissioners disk, and wait until EWBB 2.0 comes out. HURRY UP ED!

Earl Weaver baseball is the standard of PC baseball games, and Earl
Weaver II promises to be the best ever. I hope these guys work well
with version II, cause I am tired of generating and am ready to play.
=====================================================================

I couldn't have done this without the blessing of our Lord and Saviour
Jesus Christ. He kept me going with these and directed me to the
correct answers I needed. All praises to the Lord, our God.

If you have any other questions or comments, I can always be reached

I hope you enjoy these players...Maybe further utilities for EW II
will come out. Who knows?
