KASSEL AIRCRAFT FACTORY RAID
JULY 10, 1944, 1000, US EIGHTH AIR FORCE
FRAMLINGHAM ENGLAND.
Good morning gentlemen. I'd rather not
hear the regulation groans which are
the usual fare when the mission map is
uncovered. This is really quite a milk
run today.
We are going to Kassel aircraft factory.
GROAN !!
We will do this with one fligth of six
B-17G's, covered by a finger of P47C's
from Leiston for escort, in the hopes
that the Krauts won't notice us.
Captain you will lead the flight. You
may hand pick your crew, and the crews
of the other five fortresses. You will
take off at noon, and while climbing,
circle the field, waiting for your
escort to meet you over Framlingham.
Once joined, in the interest of con-
serving the figther's fuel, immediately
head for Woensdrecht air base on the
continent, your first navigation check
point. Bring your aircraft to 20,500
feet.
Your next navigation check point is
the Maastricht Bridge. From there fly
fly east north east toward check point
2 being carefull to stay equa-distant
to Dusseldorf and Dortman, avoiding all
built up areas and the flak that is
is co-located. Stay on this heading
until you are about 15 miles north of
Kassel and a heading of 180 degrees
from it. Turn and take up a heading as
close to 180 as possible, while keeping
the nose of your plane centered on the
factory complex.
After bombs away turn hard left to 90,
continue until out of flak range, then
north to check point 4 and home.
