You have just arrived in England and
on your first mission. Being new you
are assigned to fly "Tail-End-Charlie"
in the formation, soon to be known as
"Coffin Corner". The left low position
in the formation.

Three other B-17s aborted on the
mission so there are only 9 of you to
make the target to Whilmshaven in your
box. As sole remaining B-17 out of your
section you have to find your own
position in the group for protecton.

The P-47 escort turned back long ago
and no friendly fighters will be seen
again.

The German radar have tracked your
attack and are waiting. The Home
Defense units of the Luftwaffe have
never engaged B-17s so do not expect
them to know the weaknesses of the
bomber box.

Keep in tight with the formation and
fend off the fighers from the group.

Historical Notes:
The British went on a daylight to
this target in 1941 and lost 15 out
of 16 bombers dispatched. Being
American, and flying "Flying
Fortresses" the 8th AF sent B-17s on
an identical mission as soon as
possible -- with almost same results.
However, due to the defensive
armament, better ability to absort
damage, less B-17s were loss as a
percentage than the British raid.
The lossses were over 10% of the
attacking force which is 3% higher
than what was calculated as
sustainable losses of heavy bombers.
