This isn't really much of a document, just a sort of summary of my experience with Rogue. 1) ROGUE works with two files. ROGUE.EXE and ROGUE.SCR. The second one is optional and is created by the program to maintain scores. 2) This program has been tested (by me) to work on an EGA or a MONO system. It's supposed to work with CGA, but I haven't had a chance to test that. 3) You don't need NANSI.SYS or ANSI.SYS. 4) Once you're in it, you can exit with an uppercase Q, and answer 'y' or 'Y' to the question. 5) When it says MORE, you hit space to go on. 6) You move with the arrow keys. You can fight something by just walking into it. There are other ways, but that will suffice for you to get your feet wet. 7) If you're curious, ROGUE originated on UNIX systems, and this version appears to be a variation of that currently available on BSD4.3. I haven't been able to decide if it's a super or a subset. You have to program it for each game with the combination Alt/F9 keys. 10s is 10 searches on one key; saves having to hit the wall ten times! . Rest key: If you are running low on hits, type 50 or 100 and then hit the period key. Scroll Lock on = Fast Play Mode. I take it off when I am doing wall searches. Capital S = Save game. Game will prompt you for a filename. If you hit you will save game as rogue.sav. Just type "Rogue -r" to begin next time. If you saved it as a filename, type "Rogue filename" to restore the game. Once you have restored a game, though, it is erased, so it might be a good idea to keep your best saved games backed up to another disk. I use the four cursor keys to move and hit, and use the spacebar to end the paused messages. It takes a certain rhythm, you will learn! If you have NUM LOCK off, you can use the 0 or INS key to go down a level once you are on the stairs. The Shift/. or > key works too! Also, the Shift/, or < is to come back UP the stairs! Yes, finding the Amulet of Yendor isn't enuf! You have to make it back up to Level 1!! You can use the keypad or the cursor keys, as noted. If you use the cursor keys with the IBM enhanced keyboard, you can use the PgUp key for Diag/Up/Right, the PgDown key for Diag/Down/Right, the Home key for Diag/Up/Left, and the End key for Diag/Down/Left.
