Three Player IPX Network Game Using DOOM v. 1.2 (Registered)


This is a text file explaining how we set up DOOM for three player network games at my office.
(Which will go un-named!)

First of all let me say that we are running a small 10 node network using MS Windows for Workgroups v. 3.11, and using Ethernet cards and cabling. It is a must to have the Ethernet cards and cabling however, the type of network you are running should not make any difference. 

This is how we set it up:

#1) Put the Novell IPX protocol file IPX.COM into your DOOM directory. 
	NOTE: You need an IPX driver for your particular network card. See your
	network administrator.

#2) Be sure the following files are also in your DOOM directory...	
	- SETUP.EXE		- ETHERSL.COM
	- IPXSETUP.EXE	

#3) Have all participants power off their machines.

#4) Everyone should then restart the machines, wait for the message "Starting MS-DOS" and                                                                                                                                                                                            	press F5. (This by-passes your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.)

#5) Do NOT log onto your network.

#6) All participants change to their DOOM directory (cd\doom)

#7) Everyone input IPX, and press Enter. (IPX will start)

#8) Everyone will then run SETUP

#9) IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ALL PORTIONS OF SETUP MATCH EXACTLY.
      That is, all players must highlight "Three Player" (if there are three players playing)
      highlight the same episode, difficulty, and highlight "DeathMatch" or "Co-Op"

#10) When all participants have matching "setups" press F10 to start the game. It may take a 	couple of   minutes to start. Everyone should see the message "Found a Node!" appear. 	(It will appear twice in a three player game for each player.)

That's it! One player will be green, another will be gray, and the third will be brown.
It's a lot of fun! Good luck!

Here are a couple of things we like to do in addition to the above.....

- Before anyone pressed F10 to start the game, have everyone press F5 and type in the word WARP (F5 W-A-R-P) A menu with all of the levels in the registered version of DOOM for all three episodes will appear. Have everyone agree on a place to go, highlight it and THEN press F10.

- In a DeathMatch game play the "Fugitive". That is two players will co-operate and hunt down the third player. It's really tough when you have TWO people chasing you!!

Note: We cannot get four players to run more than 30 seconds before it freezes up, but what the hell? We can't have everything! (or at least not until DOOM 1.4)
