(...Duh... if you're reading this, you've probably done that, but this seems to be a standard statement in most manuals :) 2. Change to your CD Drive: Like type D: at the prompt (If D: is your CD-ROM drive) 3. Type INSTALL 4. Give a destination directory for the 4Ever DOOMed software. Install will only copy about 200K of stuff to your hard drive CONFIGURATION >>> 1. Change to the directory where you installed the software. e.g. C: CD 4EVER 2. Type 4EVER to start 4Ever DOOMed -- DO NOT RUN THE 4EV.EXE FILE - The software won't be able to run DOOM without 4EVER.BAT 3. The first time you run 4EVER, you will be asked to provide some info: Type the directories where your DOOM and DOOM 2 games are installed. You may leave one of these blank if you have only one of DOOM or DOOM 2. Don't leave both blank, or 4EVER will get mad at you :) Enter the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive without a colon. e.g. "D" NOT "D:" Select which COM port your modem is on. VERY IMPORTANT if you will be playing modem games. TOTALLY UNIMPORTANT if you will not. The "Extra Parameters" edit boxes are for specifying any command line parameters which 4EVER does not support. If you are familiar with the command line parms for DOOM, SERSETUP, and IPXSETUP, you can use these spaces to customize your DOOM setup. If you are not familiar with the command line parameters, don't worry about these fields. You can find a description of the command line parameters in the DOOM ReadMe file. However, 4EVER will handle most of the parameters automatically for you. You can return to the configure screen anytime by selecting CONFIGURE from the SETTINGS menu. RUNNING DOOM >>> 1. You can start a basic DOOM game by clicking on NEW GAME 2. An options dialog box will appear which allows you to set many game parameters: - Choose your starting episode and mission (Remember, you start a game with only a pistol, not all the goodies you would have had you completed the previous level :) - Choose your skill level - Choose between a. Normal Monsters - business as usual b. No Monsters - kinda dull (useful for deathmatch) c. Fast Monsters - they fire fast, watch out! d. Respawn Monsters - they rise from the dead to haunt you once again - Play/Record Demos - SEE PLAYING & RECORDING DEMOS SECTION - Choose player speed - Select "Turbo" for a big speed boost. (Makes up for being caught with just a pistol in your hand...) - Choose your game type - SEE MULTI PLAYER GAMES SECTION FOR INFO ON HOW TO CONNECT VIA MODEM OR NETWORK - Hit "Run Doom" to exit 4Ever DOOMed and run DOOM. You will be returned to 4Ever DOOMed upon exiting DOOM. - Or, of course you can wimp out and hit "Cancel." PLAYING CD ADD-ON LEVELS >>> 1. In the main 4Ever DOOMed window, you will see a list of "WAD Files." (What is a WAD file, you may ask ?? A WAD file contains objects such as walls, doors, maps, monsters, weapons, power-ups, graphics, music, sound FX, etc... Basically it can contain all the stuff that makes up one or more levels of DOOM. In your DOOM directory you will find a big 11 Meg file named DOOM.WAD (Hence the name "WAD" file) which contains all the data for all the levels in the registered version of DOOM. When you add WAD files from the 4Ever CD to DOOM, the DOOM game engine will use the data in the add-on WAD file (technically called a "PWAD" file) in place of the corresponding data in the main DOOM.WAD file (technically called an "IWAD" file). Therefore, by including music in a PWAD and adding it to DOOM, the main DOOM music will be replaced. Or, as in the case of most PWADS, including data which makes up DOOM level E1M1 will replace E1M1 in the IWAD file, and you have now added a whole new level to DOOM! It is important to note that adding a PWAD file does not modify your main IWAD file.) 2. To add a WAD file to DOOM, select one from the list and click "Add." The WAD name will move from the "WAD Files" list to the "Selected WADS" list. 2a You can read the text file description written by the original author of the selected WAD file. These descriptions often include a description of the level, its difficulty, its intended use (single-player or deathmatch), a storyline, and solution hints. Just hit "Read" to browse this description for any selected WAD file. Click the close box or hit escape to return to the main screen. 3. The "Levels Replaced" map on the right will show which DOOM level(s) that the WAD you have selected will replace when you run DOOM. 4. You may add more than one WAD file, provided that the levels which the multiple WAD files replace don't conflict. e.g. You can add a WAD file which replaces the entire episode 2 levels 1 thru 9, but you then could not add another WAD file which replaces episode 2 level 1. 5. When you add multiple WAD files, the map shows *'s to show which levels have been replaced, and it shows X's to show which level(s) have been replaced by the WAD file currently selected in the "Selected WADS" list. - If a WAD file shows no levels replaced, it contains a non-level add-on such as music, sound efx, or graphics. 6. To run DOOM with the selected add-on WAD files, just hit "New Game" and set up your new game as described in the "RUNNING DOOM" section. - You may notice that the names of the WAD files you have selected appear in the "Missions" box. - To play a particular level, select it in the "Missions" box. DOOM 2 >>> 1. To switch to the bonus DOOM 2 options on the CD, choose "DOOM 2" from the FILE menu. 2. You can choose your add-on levels and start your DOOM 2 game in the same way as you do for DOOM, except for the following difference: - In DOOM 2, levels are named MAP01 through MAP30 instead of being organized by Episode#/Mission#. 3. To return to DOOM options, select "DOOM" from the FILE menu. LOADING SAVED GAMES >>> 1. To load a saved game, hit "Load Game" instead of "New Game" in either the DOOM or DOOM 2 main windows. 2. A list of your saved games will appear in the game setup dialog box. Select the one you wish to restore. 3. You can also select multiplayer options to connect with other players via modem or network. 4. Hit "Run Doom"/"Run Doom 2" to restore your game. 5. IMPORTANT NOTE - If you have selected a WAD file to replace the level on which your saved game is going to restore to, you MUST HAVE SAVED the game under that same WAD file. If you restore a saved game into a different WAD file level from the one you saved it under, BAD THINGS CAN HAPPEN. The 4Ever software will warn you of this possibility, and if you proceed, you do so at your own RISK. PLAYING & RECORDING DEMOS >>> RECORDING - 1. To RECORD a demo of your own, when setting up your DOOM game, select "Record Demo" in the demo box. 2. An edit line will appear for you to type the name of your recorded game. 3. The demo will be saved to your DOOM/DOOM 2 directory under the filename .LMP. DO NOT TYPE THE EXTENSION .LMP in the edit box. 4. If you are familiar with the command line parameters for extending/ limiting recording time & size, you can enter these parameters in the configuration dialog box ("Settings" item in "Config" menu) on the Extra Parameters line. 5. Run DOOM! Your demo will be saved when you quit. PLAYING - 1. To play a demo you have recorded, any other demo in the DOOM directory, or one of the DOOM built-in demos (demo1,demo2,demo3), select "Play Doom Demo" in the Demo box. 1a To play a demo from the 4Ever CD, select "Play CD Demo." 2. A list box will appear with your demo file choices. Just select one and hit "Run Doom" 3. The demo will play until finished, or you can use the DOOM menu to QUIT, and you will be returned to 4Ever DOOMed. 4. If you select a CD demo, make sure that if there is a WAD file with the corresponding name, that it is selected. If you load a demo which was created under an add-on WAD file but you don't also load that WAD file, BAD THINGS CAN HAPPEN. Also, some CD Demo files may not be compatible with your version of DOOM, and may not load properly. MULTI-PLAYER GAMES >>> 1. You can connect via modem or network with other players for cooperative or deathmatch play. See your DOOM/DOOM 2 manual for details on what modem/network equipment and protocols are compatible and how to play multi-player games. 2. If you select cooperative, deathmatch, or alt deathmatch in the game setup screen, you can choose to connect via direct serial, modem, or network. 3. If you are connecting via DIRECT SERIAL, 4Ever will run the SERSETUP.EXE program instead of DOOM.EXE, and SERSETUP will attempt to connect to the other computer through a direct null-modem connection to your serial port. 4. If you are connecting via MODEM, 4Ever will run SERSETUP and call the phone number you specify in the edit box, or if you leave the edit box blank, 4Ever will run SERSETUP in auto- answer mode. 5. If you are connecting via NETWORK, you can specify which port number each player will use and also specify how many players (2-4) will be entering into the game. 4Ever will then run IPXSETUP.EXE with the proper parameters. MEMORY & HARD DRIVE ISSUES >>> 1. When 4Ever loads add-on WAD files, it copies the files from the CD to your DOOM directory under the names 4EVER#.WAD where # is the number 1,2,3,etc. depending on how many WAD files you have added. You must make sure you have at least some free space to accomodate these files. 4Ever will re-use these files each time it loads a game, so it will NOT fill up your drive with more and more files each time you play. 2. The process of copying these files may delay startup of DOOM up to a minute or more if you have selected several files, since these files must be located on the CD. 3. Some WAD files (especially those containing music and those which replace multiple DOOM levels) can be 1 MB or more. These complex WAD files may run slow on less than a 486/33, and MIGHT not run at all on 4 MB machines. If you have problems loading a specific WAD file, don't load that file again unless you add more memory. FILES ON THE CD >>> 1. \ARCHIVES directory - Zipped (compressed) versions of all levels and utilities and extras on the CD. 2. \LEVELS directory - In these subdirectory you will find all the add-on WAD files, their TXT descriptions and some LMP demos which go along with a particular WAD file. e.g.: JERKY.WAD - Add-on level file JERKY.TXT - Description of JERKY.WAD JERKY.LMP - Demo of JERKY.WAD These files are loaded for you by the 4Ever DOOMed software. 3. \TEXT directory - Various text files containing tutorials on creating WAD files, cheat codes for DOOM & DOOM 2, and strategies for playing DOOM. Read them with any text editor or viewer, such as the DOS "TYPE" command, DOS "EDIT", or WINDOWS "Notepad" or WINDOWS "Write." 4. \UTILS directory - D1 subdir contains various utilities to edit saved games, create DOOM levels, and add music, graphics, and sound to DOOM. The DMAUD, DMMUS, and DeHack programs use .MUS files, .DEH files, .WAV files, and .GIF files to add stuff to your main DOOM.WAD file. Read the text descriptions of these utilities for more info on their operation. IMPORTANT - Before using any utility which directly modifies your DOOM.WAD or DOOM.EXE file, back these files up, or be prepared to re-install DOOM if something goes wrong. Cypress Software, Inc. has provided these utilities only as a distribution service, and cannot support the operation of, or be responsible for the actions of these software utilities. 5. \XTRAS directory - Add-on graphics, sound, and weapon files for DOOM and DOOM 2. Many add-ons work only with the utilities such as DMAUD, DMGRAPH, and DeHacked. See IMPORTANT notice above. Read the text descriptions in each subdir for more info on these extras. 6. \SHAREWAR directory - Various SHAREWARE utilities such as level editors and front-end DOOM WAD managers. These files are only provided as a distribution SERVICE and are not supported by Cypress Software in any way. The SHAREWARE concept is a try-before-you-buy software distribution method. If you like and use these programs, they carry an extra fee for their continued use. With the exception of this directory, all of the files on the 4Ever CD are FREEware, and carry no extra fees. We decided to include these SHAREWARE programs as a service to you so you can have access to try these utilities. If you use the programs in this directory, please register them! If you support the shareware concept, these companies will continue to develop more great DOOM utilities for us to use. NOTES >>> 1. The WAD file "CRINGE" is meant to be played together with its sound and effects WADS "CRINGFX" and "CRINGSND." All three files can be found together in the WAD list box. 2. Some sound and graphics WADS have been renamed FX*.WAD so they can be easily found in the alphabetical WAD list box.
