Freeway

Welcome to the twisted Hollywood version of Little Red Riding Hood. Freeway is the story of how young Vanessa Lutz (Reese Witherspoon) travels to her grandmother's house only to encounter drugs, violence, necrophilism, and murder. When Vanessa's mother is taken to jail for prostitution, her only choice is to go into Child Services or find her grandmother up in Stockton. When her car breaks down on the freeway, psychologist Bob Wolverton (another element of the fairy tale), played by Kiefer Sutherland, pulls over and offers to give her a ride up through Los Angeles. As night falls, Vanessa soon realizes that the man that picked her up is the infamous I-5 murderer. After shooting and leaving him for death, Vanessa is picked up by the authorities and taken into custody. Now it's up for them to decide who's crazier: the ghetto child of a junkie prostitute or the deceitful lies of a murdering child pornographer.

This suspense-comedy movie made me laugh and cringe. Although this movie had many violent themes and sensitive subjects, what made it funny was the fact that Vanessa was a complete airhead when it came to certain parts. One example is when they're in the courtroom and Bob enters with wheelchair. Most people would feel sorry for this man and pity him. Vanessa calls him many names such as sh*t face motherf*cker, chipmunk face, and his wife skipper. There's even a part when she's inside Bob's van holding a gun to his head. She smacks him in the head because he socked her in the face and cut off her ponytail. I'll be the first to admit that I found this part absolutely hilarious and couldn't stop laughing.

The actors in this movie did their job very well. Most of the characters were either insane, violent, or drug intoxicated. Reese Witherspoon's body language and facial expressions really do bring the character of Vanessa Lutz to life. For a moment, I did forget that she was an actress and really did believe that she really was a sixteen year old illiterate social deviant. Most of the themes in this movie were really violent or sensitive subjects. I didn't let them ruin the purpose of the movie or the nature of the entertainment. Even the surprise ending was a twisted Little Red Riding Hood knock off. With the talents of Amanda Plummer and Brooke Shields lending their hands in this sick little tale, this movie is destined to be a cult classic.
