Bubble BoyBefore I start this review, I must let you know the only reason why I saw this movie is because I won free tickets. Other than that, I wouldn't have paid to see it, not even to rent it on VHS.
The best way to describe this movie is that it's a cross between The Boy In The Plastic Bubble, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, and Bingo (yes, that dog movie). The movie is about a young guy (Jake Gyllenhaal) who was born without any immunities that prevent common germs from killing him (I bet John Travolta would be turning in his grave if he had one). One day, he befriends his next door neighbor (Marley Shelton) and soon falls in love with her. Not only does she teach him about the world which his mother sheltered him from, but she also teaches him about life and friendship. She comes to him one day with news of her wedding at Niagara Falls. Now the bubble boy is on a trip across America to stop the wedding of his true love.
Although this movie has some funny jokes and may seem a tad bit racist at times, it does however make fun of all races equally. One example is the Indian guy called Push Pop. His job of selling ice cream is merely a disguise to spreading his religion. Too bad for him that he accidentally kills a cow on the road. When he kneels to pay his respect, a cult bus runs over the cow over with blood splashing on Push Pop's face.
Aside from the bubble jokes,
various pronunciation of the word, "vato," and the inkling
of a threesome with a biker, Bubble Boy is not intended for the
entire family. True, it does feature Verne Troyer (Mini Me from
Austin Powers) and clips of the old Land of The Lost TV show,
Bubble Boy is intended for a mature audience and probably could
have been written better by a 13 year old. I admit that I did
have several laughs throughout the movie, it will be a while before
I would want to see this one again.
