Better Off Dead
When Lane Meyer's (John Cusack) girlfriend decides to dump him for a rival skier, Lane decides that his life is no longer worth living and determines to kill himself. Ironically, every attempt to end is life results in more trouble for him. Not only is does he have to deal with the loss of his girlfriend, but it seems that the entire town knows about it and wants to ask her out. If that wasn't bad enough, Lane continues to have more problems with psycho paper boys, street racing Asians, his bizarre family, his brother the genius, and a boss that reminds us of the 1st job we ever had. The only hope our young hero has lies in the French foreign exchange student who lives next door. However, she has her own problems to deal with because her host mother constantly tries to have her date her obese nerdish son.
Better Off Dead is definitely one of the top teen romance comedies
of the 80's. This movie has humor that no other movie seems to
have. At times we really feel for Lane's loss and at other times
we see how strange his imagination has to offer. Accompanying
Lane in his wacky adventures to get his girlfriend back are Curtis
Armstrong (Revenge of the Nerds) and Diane Franklin (The Last
American Virgin). One of the scenes that will always be classic
about this movie is that psycho paper boy who seems to pop up
at random moments asking for his, "two dollars." Whenever
I hear someone ask for two dollars, I can't help but to laugh
and remember this classic comedy.
