| Copenhagen makes 5 deals early on. After a rough start to the season, Blizzard GM Mike Osterloh decided that the team needed a shake up. The shake up began when talks with Winnipeg GM, Ryley Weir were initiated. Weir made stud young defensemand Dion Phaneuf available, along with youngster Danny Fritsche. The asking price, Copenhagens top center, and first Free Agent signing ever under new management, Pavol Demitra., and a 2nd round pick. Osterloh believes that defense is one of the most important pieces of building a winner, so the chance to grab Phaneuf could not be passed by. The team gained a top, up and coming defenseman, but at the cost of losing their top center. Could this be overcome?? As the team started to really slide, Osterloh decided to go after another top center to fill the void losing Demitra left. Well, he certainly shook up the team by dealing top forward Scotty Gomez, and pending UFA Brendan Shanahan to the Prowlers for former Port Allegro player, Joe Sakic, and Danny Briere. "It was a tough choice to make. We really like Briere, and getting a guy like Sakic, is unbelievable. To top it all off, both players are signed to long term deals. We expect Danny Briere to develop into the top line player he is projected to be, and Sakic's scoring and leadership will hopefully help to lead Copenhagen deep into the playoffs. As for losing Shanny. we weren't sure that our current cap make up would allow for us to resign Shanny. He certainly has been a phenomenal force for us, and deserves quite a raise. We just don't knwo that the kind of raise he deseves is in our budget for next season. In this day of salary cap hockey, it's tough to balance everything. It's a numbers game. Losing Gomez will hurt, and definitely come back to haunt us. No doubt about that. But, in order to get something good, something good always has to be given up. We'll miss both players, and wish them the best of luck against everyone, but us!" The 3rd deal could be a key one depending on how far the Blizzard team goes should they make the playoffs. High Scoring winger, Andrew Brunette was acquired from the Attack for 2 prospects. It is hoped that Brunette will add some much needed scoring punch to the lineup! Deal number four involved moving d-man Mathieu Dandenault to the Prowlers for for a prosepect and cash. " As previously stated, Matty was the victims of a numbers game, We simply had no choice but to move him. " The fourth deal, and perhaps one that could be significant in the future. Finally, the 5th deal could turn out to be one of the best in the future. The Blizzard acquired winger Chris Higgins from the Cannons. "we think Chris will be playing in the DWSHL sooner than later, and are thrilled to have been able to acquire him!" said Osterloh This team isn't done yet. Look for more changes in the future as the team is rumorded to be looking for addtional scoring help, and perhaps some insurance in goal. |
