The goal of this project is to create an index of the Holy Cross Cemetery Records. The index will provide all the information that is available on the original daily record of burials in a sort able spreadsheet format:
Note- all of above information may not have been filled in for every interment.
The total estimated burials at Holy Cross Cemetery is 130,000. As of spring 2009, we have indexed 15,000+ burials.
This project started in 2007 using microfilm rolls from the local Family History Center (FHC). Due to the need to use microfilm readers during normal business hours of the FHC, the inherently slow nature of using microfilm readers and the slow response to our request for some rolls, the Holy Cross Cemetery Microfilm conversion to Digitized Images Project was launched in 2009.
The use of digitized images instead of microfilms is expected to speed the process of Indexing by allowing those involved in Indexing to do the work at home on there own computers, at their own pace, versus the need to go to a FHC during specific hours. Hopefully the ability to work from home will also appeal to more people - "many hands make light work".

This projects receives the digitized pages and disburses them out to individuals to do the indexing. Each Index page is then proofed by another worker to ensure accuracy.
This project has had the support of the cemetery in identifying pertinent record availability. BIGS will make the Index and Digitized Cemetery Records available at the GAA Library as the work continues.
