| THE 27th HOUR |
| One day, 24 little hours, why oh why can't it be more? Everyday, usually around 10:30pm when I'm finishing my homework, I think about why there can't be more than 24 hours in a day. Eventually, after enough of these ponderings, I've come to the conclusion that we could use 27 hours in the day. Now, this number was not just randomly picked out of the air. I started by trying to figure out where the number 24 came from. Sometime, long ago, someone invented the minute. This number was, unlike 27, randomly created. Then, they put 60 of them together. Most likely this came about through the "HOUR GLASS." And 60 minutes were probably easy to carry and small enough to fit anywhere. Once the minute and the hour were established someone decided to find out how many there were between sun up and sun up. Now this makes sense, but is extremely inaccurate for the sun rises at a different moment each day. So someone figured out that the were 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour, and the time it takes for 13 oz of sand to fall 3 in through a 1 mm hole is one minute. So why is 27 hours any better than 24? Well, first of all I realized that 25 hours was not enough. One extra hour will change nothing, just like February 29th doesn't change a thing. So I thought about long it takes for a good long nap (being drowsy, because by now its usually 11:45 pm) and 3 hours was born. There, we should have 27 hours in the day. Think of all the useful things that could be done if the earth were just a little bit further from the sun. Or at least think about how much sleep you could get. -CANCOBA H. JAWS |
