Jennifer Ehle, who has been absent from our stages since her triumph in Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing six years ago at the Donmar (she won a Tony award when it moved to Broadway), has agreed to star opposite Kevin Spacey in The Philadelphia Story, which opens at the Old Vic on May 7.

She will play Philip Barry’s mixed-up heiress Tracy Lord, with Spacey playing her ex-husband who just happens to be in town on the eve of her second marriage.

Ms Ehle famously starred in the hit 1995 BBC version of Pride and Prejudice opposite Colin Firth.

Laura Linney was in line to perform in the play, but the dates conflicted with a movie she’ll be making in Scotland called Driving Lessons with, hopefully, Julie Walters and Rupert Grint of Harry Potter film fame.

Rehearsals for Ms Ehle – who, as the daughter of Rosemary Harris, is considered theatre royalty – start on April 3.
