How interesting! I ran
accross the "medium is the message" quote just recently, and although
I'm still not quite sure exactly what the point is (if television is the
medium, what is the message?), it intrigues me. I can see how it may be applied
in Art- medieval art is insanely symbolic and the messages and meaning of the pieces
are communicated through the medium of the painting and the symbols (am I
applying the meaning of the quote approprately?).
I read the Harry Potter
books a while back at the suggestion of another teacher, and was amazed by the
depth of symbolism in the stories, as well as in the structure of the story.
I've since studied more thoroughly they symbolism of the idea of
"story" and its uses and applications- and it hits on all sorts of
life issues: good vs. evil, life vs. death, love vs. hate.
Maybe I've taken a different
branch of semiotic theory here, but the main ideas are very interesting and
probably very attainable by young students if applied age-appropriately.
Thanks for an interesting
read!

To be honest, I don't really
have a good handle on this "semiotic theory". It is a new term to me
this week, came up in this article, and also in some web research that I've
been doing. Has this come up in any other coursework or reading that you've
done recently?
About "the medium is
the message" ... I don't have a corner on that, either, but I'm developing
an understanding of it, at least in part. It has to do with the whole context
of a communication situation carrying meaning - not just the actual words. I'm
beginning to think McLuhan may have overstated things just a bit for the
purpose of emphasis ... but I haven't actually read that quote in the context
of his other writings to explore his self-interpretation.
