Introduction

Having run N gauge layouts for a number of years, when I learned in 2002 that Graham Farish had ceased production I thought that it would be a good idea to try and acquire at least one example of everything that Farish had produced which covered the operating period that I was interested in, to add variety to my stock and to "fill in the gaps" so to speak.

Therefore I drew a fairly arbitrary line in the sand at 1985, which was the earliest point that I could really remember the prototype from and set about acquiring those examples of Farish items that I didn't already have, which could be run on the rail network between then and now.

I quickly discovered that there was far more to collect than I expected and that a number of items had variants; same vehicle, same livery, same stock code, different fleet number. I also discovered that considering the stock was produced in recent times (1979-2001) there was very little in the way of documentation of what was made and when.

After much travelling (and much spending!) I now believe that I am almost there, so have converted my database into a more readable format, which I am making available so that others may see what there is to be had and also to help me fill in the gaps that I am sure are still there.

The table below contains everything that I am aware of that could be run between 1985 and today. The earliest items are all of the corporate blue diesels (except Deltics and Westerns), blue/grey liveried coaching stock and the traditional wooden wagons that could still be around, albeit in non-revenue use.

Typos aside, all of these items exist. Except for 3799, these are all items that I either own or have seen in the flesh with my very own eyes. No squinting at photographs in catalogues or magazines was undertaken to fill in the gaps.

I would be interested in hearing from anybody who is aware of additional items or variants that are not on the list. For example, I am aware that the DMU and HST driving cars were available separately at one time. I would also like people to point out typos or answer the questions where questions are posed.

Please note that some of the freight stock fleet numbers are not very discernible and are best guesses from staring at various vehicles through a magnifying glass. However, with one clear exception (4313) none of the freight stock seems to have been issued with more than one fleet number per stock code so this is perhaps less of a concern.

Over the years, stock has been issued in a multitude of boxes of various shapes, materials and branding styles. I am not going to drill down that deeply into box variants - I leave that as an exercise for someone with a lot more time and money than I have - but have highlighted the different DMU and HST box styles, as these frequently coincided with variations in fleet numbers; e.g. set A would be available in one box, with set B being available in the other box.

If this list is of any help to anybody other than myself, then the exercise will have been worthwhile.

David Lucas. NGS 14696.

Usage

I am happy for people to use this list in whole or in part for their own personal records. I am also happy for people to use this list as a subset of a larger list, covering more of the Graham Farish range. All I ask is that I am credited for my work.

However, if you intend using this list in whole or in part for an article or a book that is to be published, in any format, whether for profit or not, then please contact me beforehand at this email address. Thank you.

  5. W40301 has the "Buffet" bodyside logo in the centre of the coach, 40322 has the "Buffet" bodyside logo to the left of the coach.
  6. Farish B1 pattern bogies.
  7. Some box labels incorrectly describe this coach as a MkII TGS. Other labels describe it correctly.
  8. Farish B4 pattern bogies.
  9. Farish B4 pattern bogies.
  10. Farish B4 pattern bogies. Early models were produced with Farish B1 pattern bogies.
  11. Farish B4 pattern bogies. Early models were produced with Farish B1 pattern bogies. "Newspapers" branding.

  13. Farish B4 pattern bogies.
  14. Farish B4 pattern bogies.
  15. 5523 carries the earlier NSE livery with a lighter blue window strip. 5525 carries the later NSE livery with a darker blue window strip.
  16. 5523 is an oddity. Shipped in a FO box, it carries a TSO number, the numeral 1 on the doors but no yellow first class stripe. Although closer to a TSO, is included under the FO stock code as this is what the label on the box states.
  17. 13514 carries the earlier NSE livery with a lighter blue window strip. 13443 and 13525 carry the later NSE livery with a darker blue window strip. Technically all of these coaches are numbered in the FK range but are described as FOs.
  18. Available in both variants of the DMU box.
  19. A one-off depot repaint. Red body, yellow rods, black roof and the usual 'wasp' ends.
  20. Comes with 3, 20' containers. Known brandings are ACL, DART, Ford, Freightliner, Hapag-Lloyd, OCL, OOCL and Zanussi.
  21. Comes with 2, 30' containers. Known brandings are CP Ships, Danzas, DART, Freightliner, Ford, Merzario, OCL and OOCL.
  22. Comes with 1, 30' container. Known brandings are CP Ships, Danzas, DART, Freightliner, Ford, Merzario, OCL and OOCL.

  24. Farish B4 pattern bogies.
  25. Farish B4 pattern bogies.
  26. I've seen a Class 47 in BR Blue with the number 47 563 and name "Red Star" with this stock code. A factory produced variant or somebodys (very good) respray?
  27. Distinguishable by having large round metal buffers. I've only ever seen 3-pole motored variants with brass gears.
  28. This stock code was originally for a Class 47 in Large Logo Railfreight Grey and a few prototypes were produced, although I've never seen any examples.
  29. Limited Edition of 500. Box has a red label and contains a numbered certificate.
  30. Also has the Bachmann stock code 371-225 on the opposite end of the box to the Farish label.
  31. A modified version of the Railfreight Distribution livery with a blue roof and "Railfreight Distribution" branding on the lower bodyside.
  32. All of the box labels for the 37699 variant that I have seen incorrectly describe this locomotive as a Class 47.
  33. Available in the later variant of the HST box. Box label incorrectly identifies this as an HST 124 set.
  34. Available in both variants of the HST box. Available as 2, 3-pole motored set and as 1, 5-pole motored set.
  35. Available in both variants of the HST box. Available as 2, 3-pole motored set and as 1, 5-pole motored set.
  36. Available in both variants of the HST box and the early DMU box. Available as 2, 3-pole motored set and as 1, 5-pole motored set.
  37. Available in the later variant of the HST box. Box label incorrectly identifies this as an HST 124 set.
  38. Available in the later variant of the DMU box.
  39. The M50303/M50330 pair were available in the early variant of the DMU box and the 51437/54218 pair were available in the later variant of the DMU box.
  40. Available in the earlier variant of the DMU box.
  41. The M50303/M59130/M50330 trio were available in the early variant of the DMU box and the 51437/59128/53751 trio were available in the later variant of the DMU box.
  42. Available in the earlier variant of the DMU box.
  43. Available in the later variant of the DMU box.
  44. Available in the earlier variant of the DMU box. Limited Edition of 500. Box has a red label and contains a numbered certificate.
  45. The catalogue shows this locomotive with the number 20137, which I have never seen "in the wild". Only seen 20215.
  46. Also has the Bachmann stock code 371-125 on the opposite end of the box to the Farish label.
  47. Limited Edition of 500. Box has a red label and contains a numbered certificate.
  48. Available in both variants of the DMU box.
  49. Available in both variants of the DMU box.
  50. This item consists of three individually boxed tank wagons placed inside the same style of box used for the early DMU sets.
  51. All of these wagons that I have seen have the TOPS code OAB and the fleet number is in the VBA range.
  52. W42023 has the early body moulding (with detachable buffers), W42263 has the later body moulding (buffer beam and steps are integrated).
  53. W41015 has the early body moulding (with detachable buffers), W41128 has the later body moulding (buffer beam and steps are integrated).
  54. W40301 has the early body moulding (with detachable buffers), W40325 has the later body moulding (buffer beam and steps are integrated).
  55. Early examples have the TOPS panel as white on black and the 'C' logo as black on yellow. Later examples have this lettering as black on white.
  56. 10536 has the early body moulding (with detachable buffers), 10623 has the later body moulding (buffer beam and steps are integrated).
