In the opening game of the season, Celtic suffered a shock home defeat at the hands of Hibs, but tonight was a different story. Although, it appeared to be history repeating itself when Celtic found themselves down after 41 minutes, when Puyol sent a long ball up to Totti, who found a streaking Adriano. Casillas did well to stop the first attempt, but Adriano one the scramble for the loose ball, firing the visitors from Anfield up 1-0. As the game progressed, Celtic fans were obviously sweating as the home side wasted shot after shot. As was the case in their previous game, Celtic had 18 shots on goal to Liverpool's 8. |

Nevertheless, Celtic persisted, and finally in the 73rd minute, Aimar, who exploited Liverpool all night down the left flank, found Larsson's head in the middle of the box on a cross above the defending Roberto Carlos. Liverpool's chances dried up in the 2nd half due to the stellar play of the new captain Bobo Balde, and center back Rio Ferdinand. The game was Celtic's to win, and Aimar to Larsson was the story of the night. One more, Aimar made a run down the left flank after making Puyol look foolish and lobbed the ball into the box, where he found a double teamed Larsson and Canizares off his line. Larsson applied the lob over Canizares and Celtic held on for the 2-1 victory.
