John William McCully
From Lois Weyandt:
(My mother, Sara Florence Lewis Schlingman, had two grandfathers in the Civil War. I have just found out about Ephriam Lewis, her father's father, so I do not have information on him yet.)
My Great-grandfather was born in 1816 in Pittsburgh and died in 1899. His name was John William McCully. He was an officer in Co. A, Forty-sixth Pennsylvania Volunteers. His wife was my Great-grandmother Eliza Louise Sutton, whom he married in 1840. Major McCully was also in the Mexican War. Before he was hit by and electric streetcar at the age of 83, he was one of the last three survivors of both the Civil War and Mexican War in Allegheny County. He died of the injuries [cause by being hit by the streetcar]. When the Mexican War broke out, he enlisted in Company A, First Pennsylvania Volunteers. He participated in several battles.
In 1866, although getting well up in years, he promptly volunteered in the Civil War. He joined a New York regiment and served throughout the war. He had in his possession a sword he carried in the Mexican War. He was buried in Versailles Cemetery with full military honors.
