Adolph Slape

From Lois Weyandt:

I came to know about my Great-grandfather ADOLPH SLAPE in the History book of Westmoreland County.  He was in a write up about my Grandfather Paul C. Schlingman, a fire chief from Pittsburgh, who came to Jeannette, PA, to start the first paid Fire Department.  His wife was my Grandmother Emma Elizabeth Slape, who was the daughter of Adolph Slape, who was in the Civil War.  He was in the battles of Gettysburg, Antietam, and Richmond.  It was through checking with Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland, that I found a Henry Schleepe--true name Adolph Slape.  I remember my father saying someone had run away and joined the Union Army.  He was in Co. 1, Forty-sixth Infantry of the Union Army.  He was born in Germany in 1844 and died in 1920.  He was eighteen at the time of enlistment.  My Great-grandmother Berger was with her mother at Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.  She was sixteen at the time.  Adolph and her were married in 1869 after his discharge.  She was 20 and he was 23.  His name is on the Pennsylvania monument at Gettysburg.  He is buried at Southside Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA.
