The St. Mary's Railroad

Southeast Georgia's Almost Forgotten Shortline

Railfans continue to look to the historic community of St. Marys, Georgia for hints of what used to be. The huge Durango-Pacific paper mill (formerly Gilman Paper Company) is now closed down. No longer do the pulpwood trucks drag their loads of pine through the heart of town. The mill's employees have been laid off and there isn't a sign of movement at the St. Mary's Railroad office, where engine #504 rests.

Even the few pieces of maintenance of way equipment present look forgotten. Word is that all the railroad's employees have lost their jobs. But then, down the tracks comes engine #305, returning from a lunch-time delivery of cars to the CSXT connection. As the crew and solitary engine pass--for a moment--it seems like old times in St. Marys.
