Race Details and Rules
Course Details
The race will start at the boat ramp in Fred Gannon State park. Racers will paddle 1.5 miles
to the head of Rocky Creek. The kayaks will be placed onshore at Rocky Creek. The racers will
trek for 1.5 miles on the Eglin reservation to the bike transition area on Range Road and will ride 2 loops of the bike course.
After finishing the bike course, bikes will be racked and racers will use the same trek to return to
the kayaks and will then paddle back to the boat ramp. There will be a short trek from the boat ramp to the finish.
Note that the courses are marked and there will be very visible markers at all turns. However, in adventure racing there
are no water stops and there will not be staff at every turn. Therefore, racers must make sure that they have made
provisions for water and must watch for the course markers. That's why it's an adventure!
We strongly urge you to take water on the paddle to carry on the first trek. You are required to wear hyrdration or carry
a water bottle on the bike.
Although the weather is cooler, you should have an electrolyte replacement drink and solid food at the bike tranistion
as you can get very dehydrated in cooler, dry weather. The bike transition will be staffed at all times to insure the safety
of your equipment.
Mandatory Equipment
Other then your body, shoes, boat, and bike, there are a few things that we need for you to bring to the race. Before the start we will check for
mandatory equipment.
- All racers must carry a whistle for the entire race. This is for signalling if you need help.
- Everyone must have a certified PFD vest for paddling.
- Water bottle or camel pack for hydration.
- Approved bike helmet.
Rules
- Both team members will complete the entire race. This is not a relay.
- Team members must stay within sight of each other for the entire race. No further than 50 feet apart.
- The team finish time will be the finish time of the last team member to cross the line
- Racers not wearing a PFD in the boat will be eliminated.
- There will be buoys marking the paddle course. All paddlers must stay to the right of the buoys going out and to the left coming back. IE...stay between the buoys and the shore.
- Approved bike helmets must be worn and buckled while on the bike
- Either water bottles or hydration packs must be carried on the bike. As a reminder, there are no bottle exchanges or water stops!
- Racers should be courteous when being passed or passing on single track. Please wait for a good opportunity to pass if you are passing,
and do your best to pull aside if being passed. You are not expected, however, to stop in order to let someone pass.
Suggestions
Some suggestions regarding race setup for those new to adventure racing.
- If you are worried about running in wet shoes, paddle in water shoes and take your running shoes with you on the paddle in a plastic bag.
- Take a bottle of water or sports drink on the paddle and take a drink before starting the trek. You will feel better later if you hydrate early. Leave the rest of the bottle in the boat for the trip back.
- Carry a camel pack on the bike and drink often. A camel pack is much easier to access then a water bottle when riding off road.
- Leave a sports drink and/or an energy bar or gel at the bike transition area. You will want something after finishing the bike
