To CleanCut Glass and Fine Glassware
THEN !!
Cut glass and very fine glass water bottles, decanters, and vases may` be cleaned by first placing the decanter on a steel knife blade, or droping into it a piece of silcer then puring into it equal quantities of hot vinegar and salt. When the decanter has become wrm put in the stopper and shake thoroughly.
Or put in two tablespoonsfuls of vinegar and a tablesponful of bakingsoda. This wil effervesce vigorously. Hold the article over the sink, but do not put in the cork, or ir the vessel nay burst,
Or fill with buttermik, let stand forty-eight hours,,and wash in soapsuds.
Or rinse with a weak solution of muriatic acid.
TO WIPE GLASS
-Glassware should bewiped dry as soon as it is lifted from the water without witing for it to drain. For glass ware use scrim or towels which have no lint.
Or rinse tthearticles with cold water and allow them to dry without wiping..They will be much cleaner than if wiped with a cloth.
To Polish Glassware-Save all tissue paper` to polish glassware. Or save scraps of chamois.. Cut into inch squares and string on a twine with darning needleas beads are astrybg. Use this to polish glassware.
NOW !!
Well ,the ladies of yesterday sure had the work cut of from them and these, were the tips of the day. Some folks still use them today for the c`ut glass they have inhereted from family and friends or the good fortune to buy.
I would suggest that only tepid water be used t`o` wash any pieces of cut glass especially older ones since they are already stressed by years. of use. I usually line my dishpan or sink with some old bath towels also and rinse in vinegar water and immediatly dry with paper towels unless I have some old worn out dishtowels. My sister-in-law..taught me this trick! Use a spray glass cleaner ,and they seem to stay cleaner longer,on nick nacks, that are ceramic..she uses furniture polish and boy do they du`st easy! Thanks Bobbi, great trick!
Now I picked up a `hint from Martha on drying decanters since it seems we cannot get our hands down to the bottom, use a long chopstick or just roll upa piece of paper towel into a cone and insert and it will wick up the water , It works I have done it.
Thats about it for now, time to put the b`urgers on the grill. I am typing this column sitting outside at the picnic table enjoying the cool fresh air!
Till next time....
