DUSTY'S THEN AND NOW

FALL COLORS

Fall is here with her beautiful colors, cool crisp nights, warm balmy afternoons. It was hard to sit in school and listen to the nun talking. I kept looking at the clock and out the window. Would 3 oclock ever come? Finally the bell . We filed out to the playground and out the gate and onto the sidewalk. Pop was waiting for me! On the way home we stopped at the store and he bought me a Dixie cup. Hopalong Cassidy was on the lid! This we said would be for Grammy since she liked all his movies. Such a treasure for her.It was a beautiful walk up the mountain to our house. Trees of so many different colors and more to be seen as we rounded the corner onto Hillside Ave.

Finally we were in our back yard. Pal came running down the path his whole body wagging. I knew he wanted to play. As we neared the side porch I looked over to the willow tree and saw Fritz sunning himself on a branch. He just waved and continued his sunning. I guess it must be an important thing to do, cause he didnt seem to want to play with us.

We walked into the house and Grammy was at the stove. I think she lived there at times, right there in front of the stove. She gave me a hug and said Ice cream again and who bought you that I laughed and said You know Pop did! She made a big fuss over the picture of Hopalong Cassidy. Oh so nice. Thank You and put it in her apron pocket.

We all sat down at the table and had our coffee. Mine was in a special cup. Pop and Grammy started to talk about apples. Little did I know this was going to be a mysterious adventure for me They agreed, tomorrow would be the day that Pop would go for the special wild apples at a secret place in the mountain.

We started off early in the morning. Grammy had packed us a lunch and made sure I had long pants, boots, and a babuska on . You never knew what was in the woods. She always worried.Pop picked up his sack at the back door with bags in it for the apples and away we went. Up the street and into the mountain. I turned to see if Grammy was still at the front of the house and I waved to her. Pop greeted the violin maker and the widow who lived in the last two houses before you entered the woods.

We walked for what seemed forever and finally came to a road. Pop, why is this road in the mountain? He took me across the road and told me to look over the wall. What a surprise I had. The whole city of Bethlehem lay below me. I could see downtown, over the mill across the river up the other side clear over the Northside to the mountains that were on the other side. Pop will you bring me at Christmas to see everything? Pop just laughed If the snow isnt too bad maybe. I could just imagine it at Christmas with the big tree on the bridge that connected the North and South sides of town. The streets lite up and the houses . I could only imagine how beautiful.Time to go on Off we went .

It seemed like we walked forever.
