Well its October again and a busy monthagain! This was do or die time. What root vegetables were left in the garden had to be brought in and buried under the side porch to last the winter. Pop was smart,he put windows in that area so the sun would keep the ground warm and give light to the parsley and celery. The bucket a day (remember those?) was also in the front cellar that the root cellar was part of..so there was heat inside also. The potatoes were put in the front or coal cellar..( wonder who remembers coal?) There they would be cool and could dry. Grammy and Pop and I wiped the potatoes free of any dirt and kept it up until it was all off.Sometimes it would take a few days of indoor drying for the soil to come off easily. Of course the coal was delivered already but the potatoes would be covered over with burlap when the next delivery was near.
There was still some canning to do , fruits late berries wild crab apples and if Unc got any pheasant ,deer or rabbit that would be canned by Mrs Fertile since she had a pressure cooker. All was looking well in the Belch larder! Let it snow,we had food.
Pop would then put the garden to bed for the winter, and enrich the soil thats when I couldnt play in the dirt anymore. Some root vegetables along with broccoli stayed out until the first frost but some came in then.
Next would be a trip to the farmers market on 3rd St. to buy buckets of herring and salt fish, sides of bacon and a few thousand other needed items. Dont know how we got so much up that hill and so much in that cellar!
Extra flour and sugar and coffee was stored in the upstairs closet where it was cool and it was off limits to me! That ended my indoor play house. NOT FAIR! But then, think of all the breads and pastries and cookies that would be a result of all that stuff.
Next came the pig ! Yes pig. It did come in one piece and the butchering began. I got to scrap the innards to make the sausage casings and the rest got cooked and canned or sent to my uncles to be smoked. He had a smoke house in the back yard, and it was legal . The only pollution you got from them was smells of things good to come. Our bacon and hams and sausages were there! Of couse I visited often and got a taste, glad I had an older cousin to snitch for me. That smoke house smelled so good! The meats were fantastic and I couldnt wait to eat them.
Well that was about it for the month of October, except for filling the goose down mattress and covers and pillows, that was a group venture. Grammy helped her sister Anna and Nina helped Grammy. NO moving was the motto and the doors were covered with blankets so that no air could blow the feathers around and believe me, the men were warned. Be careful coming in, we are stuffing we goose down and feathers today. Often wondered why the geese ran, when they saw the women coming..they knew they were going to loose their down! Poor geese.
Winter was looking pretty good now, all was looking well now.
Those were the days of careful preparation and we were ready for anything and if it didnt come..we were happy. Today, say snow and everyone flies to the markets and stocks up with mostly junk. Glad we thought ahead!
