DUSTY'S THEN AND NOW

* C A M P I N G *

            I am sitting at the table in our trailer, making dinner, hubby is `watching TV, the rain is coming down and I am looking out the windows at the` beautiful Pocono Mt. range. Oh yes and the AC is running and some lights are lit.

            Camping isnt new! The Nomads must have been the first, roaming the desert, putting up tents and cooking over open fires, and watching the stars at night.

            Maybe the Gypsies came next, in their wagons that were miniature homes inside, carrying all their worldly possessions. They also cooked over open fires told stories to keep their history alive.

            Then those good old cowboys, riding all day, chuck wagon going ahead to prepare for the days meals. They also slept out side on their bed rolls that they carried on their horses tied behind them on the saddle and had a campfire going, and of course they cooked over that fire. Bathroom? Well like the rest of them, they found a private place.

            Lets not forget the Military, now those boys were campers. You name it they did ` it! Carried their own tents and food, set the tents up and sometimes slept on the ground in their sleeping bags. And again cooked over open fires in sometimes, their helmets! They had the courtesy of digging holes to use as potties.

            Then came the first camper in the USA, called a car house. Had all the conveniences of home. Of course they still cooked out side over an open fire and carried water from its supply, as the Nomads and Gypsies did.

            Of course they all carried water, food, personal items and something to sleep on

            NOW, well we have these Hugh motor homes that have everything and I mean everything down to dishwashers, washers, dryers, trash compacters, and microwaves, air conditioners and yes a special place for the computer, along with elec heat or propane heat. Of course now we have bathrooms complete with tub and shower, what more can you ask for? Storage area, called a basement which only means the RV is higher and there is storage under the floor complete with a compartment that is a wash up area complete with sink and a little light. Now hubby dear can wash up out side and not bring the dirt in! Automatic steps, out when the door opens and in when it closes. On board closed circuit TV, no more jumping out and helping the driver back in. it can be done from the cockpit. The inside of the RV looks like your home away from home the latest of furnishings and decorations and the wood cabinets, Even down to a recliner and a sleeper sofa, and plush carpeting.

            Well it sure is a long way from the Nomads and their camels, but that was then and this is now!

Till Then
