*It's a typical Southern California day, the sun is shining and the bathing beauties are out in their finest, which means, not much at all. Dusty's lakefront home is seething in sunshine through his living room window, where there he sit in his recliner watching television is the man himself. Greg walks through the door (Yes, even though he owns burger chains, he still lives in Dusty's house. I guess it's not hard to understand why, the place is huge, and he doesn't have to pay rent!) and greets Dusty. The two exchange small talk about how their day has gone before Dixson slips a card to Dusty that reads "Call back Matt Kraven ASAP, important."*
When did Matt Kraven call, Greg?
Before you woke up, but like the notecard says, it's important, so i'd call him back now.
That sounds like an idea, I haven't spoken to him since EFW closed down, I wonder what he wants?
*Dusty picks up his cell phone that has been resting on the arm of the recliner and dials up Matt Kraven*
Hello? President Kraven here.
President Kraven huh? President of what may I ask? This oughta be good, you're always up to something huh?
Dusty! Hey man, so glad you called, i've got an offer for you man, now before you shoot me down, I want you to hear me out...
Matt, if you want me to wrestle, it's not going to happen. I have some really good things going on in my life right now that don't involve me getting my ass kicked on national television multiple times a week.
You told me you were going to take a break for a couple of months, well, it's been six months. I figured you'd be interested in the new company I just started up, Internation Championship Wrestling Association, but you can just call it ICWA. I got some investors, some talent to work real cheap to start out with, and if we get you, we have a really good shot at getting a new television deal. I wouldn't lie to you Dusty, i'm not talking about some hokie local regional crap channel with bad production value, i'm talking about state of the art facilities, great new ring, and major exposure.
Wait wait wait a minute there Matt, why am I so important in this? You can get a television deal just selling people on professional wrestling. You don't need me.
Come on Dusty, who do you think you're kidding? You're the straw that's going to stir the drink, you're on television every week, people know who you are inside the ring and outside the ring. I just thought you, a former World Champion, would want to embark on this new journey with me, for old times sake?
I know you too well Matt, so cut the crap and get to the point.
All right, without you, we don't get a TV deal, I need you, i'll pay you whatever you want within reason, and you my man can be the centerpiece of this company, the pride and joy of ICWA, we can market your t-shirts, see if we can't get Brett to fork over some of that EFW footage of you so we can get dvd's going, the whole shebang, but we need you man.
I don't think you need to go that overboard, i'm just a regular guy, no specialty treatment needed. The thing I am uncomfortable with is simply I haven't wrestled in six months, and i'm just not good around strange locker rooms man, you know me. I wouldn't have even considered stepping foot inside an EFW arena if Brett weren't the man in charge there, I just don't deal well with strangers and nobody there that I can relate to.
Dusty, you've got me, and Greg of course. If you'll just think about it...
I don't think i'll need to Matt, I don't think i'm the man you need for this kind of thing.
Brian Pearlman is there! Brian Cady is on the roster too, and Johnny Rotten. I told you I had guys working out of loyalty, all those guys you're comfortable with.
I am hardly "comfortable" with Johnny Rotten or Brian Cady, but Pearlman's my little buddy, if he wants me there, I think I just might come man.
He's one of the reasons I called you man, he wants you here, I want you here, come on, you know you want to get back into that ring and steal the show every single night. I know you, don't say you don't want to do that.
Well...there goes my sabbatical...
Is that a yes? Dusty? Is that a yes? Tell me it is...
It's a yes Matt, it's a yes.
Perfect man, i'll tell the television stations that you're on board and get a hold of you later to discuss the contract terms, maybe we can go out to lunch or dinner or something?
Sounds like a plan man, i'll talk to you later.
*Dusty hangs up and tosses the cell phone over to Greg, who sits it down on the coffee table. Greg looks at Dusty, waiting for an explanation.*
Well needless to say, i'm back in the game. Kraven has started up his own little promotion and needs me there to convince television executives to put us on tv. He seemed pretty adamant about bringing me in, said Brian Pearlman really wanted me there too. I figure i'm going to have to head the gym pretty soon, seeing as I haven't worked out in a couple of days; i'm going to need all the extra muscle I can get before going back in there and getting the holy hell beaten out of me time and time again.
Well does he want me there?
He didn't say anything about signing you to a contract like you were in EFW, but if he needs me as much as it sounds like he does, i'll find a way to ink you a deal with him.
So when's the first show man?
That depends on whether or not the guys at the studios will put us on the air, until then we just have to play the waiting game and hope something comes up soon. I'm going to meet with Kraven whenever he manages to get tv though, then we're going to discuss the contract and stuff.
How much did he offer you to wrestle again?
Well he didn't put a flat number on the table, but i'm expecting the initial offer to be pretty high considering the amount of badgering he did.
Oh. Well it looks like you're back and going to be better than ever. You feeling it man? It's the winds of change, and the change is back, Dusty J returns to the squared circle, it's going to be one hell of a night.
Yeah...
What's wrong man? You don't seem to be as enthused as I am.
Well i've been out of it for six months, ring rust is really going to kick my ass when I first get out there.
You're stronger than ring rust man, you've been a major success every stop you've been to, I don't see any reason this company Kraven has started will be any different.
I'm over the hill...
You're twenty-six...
I'm really fat...
You're only 210...
Oh yeah? Well i'm really...
*The phone rings, Greg and Dusty reluctantly stop their game. Greg picks up the phone, it's Matt Kraven. Greg mouths "Kraven" to Dusty and hands him the phone.*
Yeah, Kraven, what up brother?
Well i've got some very exciting news for all of us, we've got a television deal!
Awesome man, very exciting, very exciting. So when do we start? A couple of weeks? Next month? A couple of months?
Even better, next Wednesday! February 22nd.
Wow...talk about little time for preperation...
Well the station wants to get this train rolling as soon as possible, and so do I. We figure this will be a great way to get the ball rolling, and nobody else ever does shows on Wednesday, so we're unopposed in that area, it's going to be great! And the best part of all...we just signed a contract to be a part of Xnet! Am I on a roll or what?
That's great! I'm starting to feel a lot more optomistic about this whole thing, it's making me a little giddy. So do you know what my match is going to be? Who i'm wrestling?
That's the best news for you, since we're upstart, you're in the title picture right away. We are going to have a nine man battle royal, according to where everybody finishes in that battle royal will correspond what match they're in that night, obviously the better you finish in the battle royal puts you in a more marquee situation. The last two men standing in the battle royal will wrestle for the ICWA Championship in the main event of the show. That's obviously what you want to set your sights on going into everything. It's going be a great show. You will be wrestling twice, so make sure you have some endurance, I know you haven't been in the ring for quite some time but if anybody can come back and kick ass without missing a beat, it's you.
Alright, so what about my contract terms? And Greg?
I would be more than happy to get Greg on board, i'll discuss terms with him at the show. For you, i'll be calling your attorney sometime withing then next 24 hours to arrange a contract for you, I know you don't want to go through that boring process.
Alright Matt, sounds fantastic, i'll talk to you later.
Alright Dusty, see you later.
*Dusty hangs up the phone and once again tosses it to Greg en route to its spot sitting on the coffee table.*
He's going to discuss contract terms with you at the show. I'm in a nine man battle royal to determine rankings for title matches. If I finish first or second in the battle royal, I wrestle for the ICWA Championship in the main event of the show.
Sounds like a plan, where to now?
Where else? The gym.
*Dusty and Greg make their way to the local Gold's Gym to get Dusty pumped up for his upcoming stint in the ICWA. It's been a little while since Dusty laced up his boots and got in the ring, but both he and Greg Dixson are confident that he can overcome anything, after all, this is a former EFW World Champion. They arrive at the gym and head in to conduct their workouts.*
*A couple of days later they are ready to board a plane and get to Columbus, Ohio. They book their tickets on for the flight there over the phone and arrive at LAX. The show is tomorrow, and the guys could not be more excited about seeing Matt Kraven, Jeremy Youngblood, and Brian "Laser Eyes" Pearlman. Greg and Dusty head to the counter.*
Hello ma'am, we're heading to Columbus. Jeffords and Dixson.
*The woman checks her computer for their names, then reports some bad news for the guys.*
You two canceled your flights last night sir...
What? No we didn't, check again.
*The woman does, same result, tickets canceled.*
Well...can we buy some tickets to Columbus right now?
I'm sorry sir, all the flights this week their are booked.
*Dusty and Greg give each other a glance and decide to call Matt Kraven, perhaps the deal fell through and they're not having the show after all?*
Matt, what's going on? Our flight tickets have been canceled, is the show not going to get off the ground or something?
What are you talking about? The show is tomorrow, why did you cancel your tickets?
We didn't, Matt. Somebody else did, and there is no way to get there, we're going to have to miss the show man.
Alright...i'll change the plans, i'll see you guys at the next show, if THAT flight doesn't get canceled.
*Dusty hangs up and heads home with Greg. Something strange is going on here, something that definitely wasn't in the plans. Dusty was supposed to be competing for a shot at the ICWA title, now that opportunity is gone because someone out there knew who the odds on favorite was and made sure to take him out before he could even get to Columbus. One thing is for certain though, Dusty has already booked three flights to Detroit, he isn't missing Sadistic Saturday Night, where he'll be taking on Tony Barrera.*
