Tuesday, September 14th, 2004 - Back and the Improv Trinity

I have been back from camp for about a month and am now back at school, but I've been lazy with the blogging. Another reason for this is that I'm still processing all that God taught me this summer, especially since so much happened in such a short time. I'm still working on that one, so it's coming sometime. Recently, I got an email from a friend asking this question: "Without looking up any sources or even the Bible, explain the Trinity." It was for a study a pastor is doing, so I wrote this short answer with the first things that came to mind.

"The Trinity is the wholeness of God in three distinct but unified persons: the Father, the Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. The Father reigns from his throne in heaven; the Son became flesh and walked the earth as Jesus Christ; the Holy Spirit dwells inside those faithful to God ever since Pentecost. Each person of the Trinity is unique and distinct from the other parts, yet so unified into a term we call 'God' that we, as humans, even have difficulty distinguishing between these persons sometimes. Each person is unique in role, but all three are one in characteristic and being."

I remember a quote from my basic general English class - "The first draft of anything sucks." I think some famous author said that. So with that, I'm sure my answer is far from a good explanation, but it's interesting for me to see answers to theological questions that we try to explain without putting time and revision into them. If I was really ambitious, I'd go from here and try to describe the Trinity (if that's even possible) after consulting sources and fellow believers' opinions. But I think for now that I'll leave it as is even though I'm not satisfied with my response.
