| First of all, I do not think that independent and foreign films are inherrently better than domestic commercial films. I just think that because indie and foreign films receive little or no attention from the media, tons of amazing films are not being watched only because no one knows about them. By the way, I may have unknowingly listed a film or two below that is neither indie nor foreign. Maybe a more accurate title for this page would have been "My favorite lesser known films." Oh well, labeling films is hardly the point of this page anyway. As with the music section, if you see that you and I have similar tastes in movies, then e-mail some movies that you've seen that you think I'd like. Oh, and if you need a second oppinion just click on the titles and you can read a review of the movie by Roger Ebert. | |||||||||||
| Last Night--This movie was just incredible. It's the kind of movie that you sit and watch all the credits at the end because you just can't move...lost completely in thought. It's about the end of the world and how various people spend their last day on Earth. Unlike big budget movies with flying saucers and comets, this film never flat out reveals how the world is going to end (although if you pay attention, there are enough clues in the dialogue for you to get an idea of what's going on) but that's really not the point of the movie. This movie is about people and emotions. It's just incredible-- the last minute of the film is very intense and beautiful. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert--It had been such a long time since I saw this, but it's such an incredible movie that I can't believe I forgot about it. Ebert seems to thing it's mediocre, but I'd say if you liked Too Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, you'd like this one even better. By the way, Priscilla predates Too Wong Foo by a year, so don't think Priscilla is an Austrailian rip off of Too Wong Foo. Is Too Wong Foo a Hollywood rip off of Priscilla? I don't know, but if it is, it wouldn't be the first time Hollywood made a watered down rip off of an excellent foreign film. (see The Vanishing) Clock Watchers--great movie with great actors about four temps and their nightmare of a work environment. Stars Parker Posey and Lisa Kudrow, so what more do you need to know? Boys Don't Cry--This is by far one of the most beautiful and saddest movies I've seen this year. Hillary Swank was awesome as Brandon.. She's an amazing actor. High Fidelity--This was a great movie with an incredible soundtrack! I usually don't like romantic comedies but this movie is superb. Being John Malkovich--A REALLY weird movie that was VERY funny. I really don't know what else to say. It's a difficult movie to sum up in a couple sentences. Life is Beautiful--Okay, surely everyone has at least heard of this movie by now! If you haven't seen it yet, then you HAVE to. You really have no choice in the matter. Walking and Talking--a really funny, quirky film about two best friends and the challenges of relationships and becoming adults without any sappy melodrama. Probably one of my favorite movies. Waiting for Guffman--co-written and directed by one of the stars of This is Spinal Tap. This mockumentary about the fictional midwestern town of Blain is quite possibly my favorite comedy of all time. Welcome to the Dollhouse--the classic ugly duckling story...except there's no transformation into a beautiful swan in this one. This is also one of my favorite comedies of all time although it is a bit dark in a bittersweet kinda' way. Strangers in Good Company (no Ebert review found)--a Canadian film about a group of elderly women that get stranded out in the middle of nowhere and have some very deep revealing conversations. It's a very dialogue intense film (which I like) and I read that most of the dialogue was adlibbed and based on the actors' real lives. Happiness--a very dark and disturbing comedy by the same guy who made Welcome to the Dollhouse. (One of my favorite film makers Todd Solondz) It's not for the squeamish, but if you like Welcome to the Dollhouse, then you'll probably like this one also. This film is unrated, so I should warn you that it is definitely not suitable for children. I would rate it R. Pi--this is the quintessence of a psychological thriller. Everything about this movie--the plot, the look, the sound, the pace of the action--keeps you right there on the edge of your seat. The Straight Story--an absolutely beautiful film about a WW II vet who drove his lawn mower to see his brother to whom he hadn't spoken to in years. Sounds crazy, but it's actually based on a true story! The Opposite of Sex--A comedy about a nice guy and his manipulative little sister. Some of the things Ricci's character says nearly made me turn off the VCR, but by the end of the movie you see that she really is a good person at heart. Last Supper--This is a great dark comedy about a group of students who invite ultra-conservatives that they deem dangerous over to dinner so they can poison them. It starts out appealing in a perverse kind of way, but as the movie progresses, you realize they're just as intolerant as the people they're against. Go read Ebert's review because I don't think this is an adequate summary, but I hate summarizig movies. |
