Untitled

Five friends stand around
A deep dark hole in the ground
They all remember the times you shared
The many times you were always there
And each girl holds a different flower
To place on the hardwood box
From the sky begins a gentle shower
And the girl in front steps up
Thinking why did you make the cut
She lays down a red rose
The second friend comes closer
Remembering all the promises you made
And all the secrets you told her
She lay down a flower of jade
A third girl appears at your side
Not even trying to hide the tears
Recalling all the times you'd eased her fears
Wondering why it's her and not you that lives
A simple white daisy is what she will give
Then she moves on, to let the next girl come
A tall and thin one, all dressed in black
Thinking this was all her fault
Why didn't she keep track
Her trembling hand strokes the wood
She carried no flower
But felt that she should
The last girl in the line
Had on a dress white as snow
She was glad for the rain
For it hid her great sorrow
Her thoughts were all jumbled
But now the others had gone
She looked around slowly
Then picked up each flower
Opened the lid of your box
While adding her tears to the showers
She lifted your lifeless hand
And placed the bouquet over you
She spoke then ever so softly
"You never did wear a dress
That's what you always told me
The prom is this week
You can't go with me now
But I know you will still see
I hope you aren't angry
I've decided not to go
So I am wearing the dress now
The one we picked out together
Remember the one you said
You wouldn't be caught dead in?"
Then the girl fell silent
As if waiting for your reply
And when she heard none
She continued to cry
Silently she whispered
Before running away
"I love you, dear sister"
Then she left you there alone
Finally giving you what you wanted
But if only you would have known
