Our story begins only a handful of turns before the present pass. There was a WeyrHold on the same penninsula as the infamous Half Circle SeaHold - the original Dusk Forest WeyrHold. For many years, this WeyrHold florished under the wonderful leadership of Lord WeyrHolder S'cair, Lady WeyrHolder Vividra and Lady WeyrHolder's Second Darrilyn.

Then came a freak Threadfall that killed S'cair and his bronze, Ruygheth. Both of the adult golds and their riders were injured, and although neither one suffered any fatal injuries, the Master Healer made the sad proclaimation that neither one would be able to fly for long periods of time. In addition, both were strongly urged to retire in the South, where the winters don't get as bitter cold. Left behind was S'cair's wingsecond, J'syn, and goldrider Sierrata, who was at the end of her weyrling training. J'syn was the tentative acting WeyrHolder, until Sierrata's Serapith rose to mate. When she did, it secured Sierrata as Lady WeyrHolder and J'syn as Lord WeyrHolder.

More riders were killed in the Threadfall than just S'cair, and so the Dusk Forest leaders found themselves asking for transfers with the other Weyrs. This did not make them beloved, for a Weyr was supposed to be autonomous. With the transfers came a goldrider, Miralle and Tyrenaaeth, who helped with the running immensely. Sierrata remained as Lady WeyrHolder, for many of the Weyr residents did not want to see the Weyr handed over to an outsider, even if she was really helpful.

Less than six months later disaster once again struck Dusk Forest, this time in the form of an earthquake. Serapith, who was on the hatching grounds with her clutch, was caught under a landslide. After she had been dug out, the injuries resulting after rocks had crushed her hind legs made it very unlikely she would ever rise to mate again. Having also sustained damage to her wings, it would also be difficult for her to fly for anything more than very short distances. And so, at the very young age of 20, Sierrata was forced to retire.

With so many losses, and with the WeyrHold nearly destroyed, Sierrata and J'syn decided to move the survivors to a WeyrHold on the Western Continent. And thus began their very brief stay at Dawn Meadows WeyrHold. Things seemed to be going well here, and J'syn was given his own wing to lead; Dawn's Arrival Wing was made up of the survivors from Dusk Forest. Sad, that so large a Weyr was reduced to a mere Wing.

Life was going well until the senior queen rose to mate and Mnalith caught her. Suddenly whispers started to spread, saying that Dusk Forest should never have come to their island. Rumors that J'syn and his followers would take over the entire Weyr and change it past reckoning. As if to prove the point of those against Dusk Forest, a tsunami struck the island. In helping with evacuations, the senior goldrider was killed. In its aftermath, J'syn and Sierrata got together with "their" people and came to the decision to leave Dawn Meadows and form their own Weyr. Surprisingly, some of Dawn Meadow's original riders elected to come with them, including a handful of weyrlings.

It took two years of moving from Weyr to Weyr looking for a location suitable for their new home. They didn't stay at any place for very long, but flew Thread and helped out while they were there. On their journey, they got quite a bit of followers who didn't want to remain at their own crowded Weyr. It was at Fort Weyr that they gained a very interesting addition - that of an entire clutch. There had been three clutches on the sands, with two more clutches having hatched not two months before their arrival. Fort Weyr was stressed about where to put all of the newly hatching weyrlings. In a very unprecedented action, the Weyrleaders of Fort decided to give Dusk Forest an entire clutch of eggs. Since the queens would never abide with eggs leaving the Weyr, they stayed until the hatching and then took the newly Impressed pairs with them. They were transported in many wagons, and trained by T'leb, who had been Weyrlingmaster's Second at Fort.

They finally hit luck at Igen Weyr. While scouring the penninsula just left of the original Dusk Forest a suitable cave system was discovered. With very little work, Dusk Forest was recreated. Work then turned to finishing up Sunset Valley Hold, nestled against the ocean about twenty miles away from the WeyrHold.

Once the WeyrHold had been finished, J'syn stepped down to become just another wingrider. Instead of having a Weyrleader and Weyrwoman, they decided to put a Council in place. The people who would make up the Council would consist of the Weyr's goldriders and wingleaders, as well as one Master of each Craft, and the Lord and Lady Holder of Sunset Valley Hold. In addition, the Council was encouraged to appoint any other people they felt would do a good job.

One of the Council's first decisions was to send messages to the other Weyrs, informing them that Dusk Forest was open and able to accept any riders, as well as any staff, that wished a transfer. Due to the fact that only a small amount of the Thread that fell was actually a danger, they did not absolutely need transfers, and could take their time about it. The weyrlings were assigned the task of bringing the message to all of the Weyrs, Holds, and Halls of Pern.

One of the first transfers came from Southern Weyr in the form of Quinne and her gold dragon, Jaerith. Since Sierrata and her gold were retired, Quinne became the senior goldrider, and the one to lead the Queen's Wing in Threadfall.
