Fundulopanchax walkeri "Spurelli"
The Fundulopanchax
genus consists a number of species that inhabit the waters of
Central-West Africa. They were formerly belong to the genus
Aphyosemion. Usual maximal length is 6-7 cm though some species can
grow bigger. The biggest is Fp. sjoestedti, known as Blue
Gularis. It reaches the length of 12 cm. Some Fundulopanchax are
aggressive and it is the best decision to keep them in species tank.
Generally they reproduce in semi-annual
manner. Eggs of some
species need dry period during incubation for proper development. If
water incubated they often refuse to hatch. Live food is preferred
but all other kinds of food are usually accepted.
I have kept just two species, so far. The first was, of course the Fp.
gardneri. It is well known fish, probably the most commonly kept
killifish (with exception of Aphyosemion australe). Maximum
body length is 7 cm. They inhabit the waters of Cameroon and
Nigeria. Many different populations and developed strains are known.
I have kept two gardneri populations, so far. The first I had
was the Fp. gardneri "Nsukka", but now I keep just
the "Rayfield" population. It is great fish for the Killi
beginners.
The second Fundulopanchax species I kept was Fp. walkeri
"Spurelli". They reach length of 6 cm, and their habitat
includes the waters of Ghana and Cote d' Ivoire. |
