The Genus Aplocheilus

The male of Aplocheilus lineatus "gold"

The fish belonging to genus Aplocheilus inhabits the waters of South Asia. Most of species come from India and Sri Lanka. They are elongated, pike like fish with flattened head.

According to the
List of valid names of killifish species derived from the 4th edition of the Killifish Master Index by Ken Lazara the genus Aplocheilus contains following species:

Genus Aplocheilus J. McClelland 1839

1 Aplocheilus blockii (Arnold) 1911
2 Aplocheilus dayi (Steindachner) 1892
3 Aplocheilus kirschmeyeri Berkenkamp & Etzel 1986
4 Aplocheilus lineatus (Valenciennes) 1846
5 Aplocheilus panchax (Hamilton) 1822
6 Aplocheilus parvus (Raj) 1916
7 ''Aplocheilus'' rubropunctatus (Steindachner) 1867
8 Aplocheilus werneri Meinken 1966

I have had and bred just one Aplocheilus species so far. It is A. lineatus. I had the wild form of this fish first, but now I have aquarium developed strain, so called Golden Wonder or simply lineatus gold. Unfortunately I do not have good photo of wild form but I have their fry. Come again in a few months and their photo will wait for you here.

This interesting fish reaches the length of 10 cm and inhabits the waters of India. It is not demanding species and as long as you maintain and feed them well, you will not have any problem with them. However if you succeed to kill them I will express my greatest admiration to you. To be honest I did that once.

A. lineatus prefers live food but readily accept all other kind of food, no matter dry or frozen.

They breed in the some manner as other plant spawning non annual killifishes.

There are interesting web site about A. lineatus made by Mexican breeder Everett Talavera. If you want to see it, and I think you should, just click on his name.
