| Creed, Durst Square Off |
| June 28, 2000 When Creed's 15 minutes of fame are up, it might do worse than opening a PR firm to provide damage control for public figures; the members of the band are certainly getting a lot of practice lately. Hot on the heels of its recent criticism of and subsequent apology to Pearl Jam, the oh-so-earnest quintet now finds itself locking horns with . The square-off started last Friday at a multi-band summer radio festival, the "K-Rock Dysfunctional Family Picnic," held in Holmdel, N.J. First, Limp Bizkit kept the audience waiting almost an hour before going on, a delay that some attributed to confusion over set times but others claimed stemmed from the band's dissatisfaction at playing before sundown. After the band finally hit the stage, king Bizkit launched into an obscenity-strewn tirade against Creed leader Scott Stapp, calling him an "egomaniac." "He's a f--king punk, and he's backstage right now acting like f--king ," Durst added, presumably not referring to Stapp's "moonwalking" prowess. Then he said "pillows and blankets" would be available for use during Creed's set. On MTV's Total Request Live Monday, Durst added fuel to the fire, saying that, after the show, Creed presented him with a book on anger management, which was inscribed with a "spiritual dedication." Creed responded to Durst's attacks yesterday with the following statement: "We are extremely disappointed that Fred Durst has taken his personal feelings toward us public, considering we have never met or spoken to him. We are more disappointed that Fred is manipulating the media and the truth by using Creed as a scapegoat for his own immature and egotistical actions. Reports have falsely claimed that Fred was stuck in traffic, which caused the fans to wait an hour in the heat at K-Rock's "Dysfunctional Family Picnic." In fact, Fred arrived and was very angry with the scheduled lineup due to the fact that Limp Bizkit was performing before nightfall and before Creed. "He then refused to go onstage, causing management from K-Rock, Creed, , and Ozzy Osbourne to spend nearly an hour trying to figure out how to get Limp Bizkit to take the stage. Fred finally agreed to play only after he "finished his dinner," having accomplished his obvious goal of delaying his set. We don't appreciate Fred's treatment of Creed, the other artists on the bill, K-Rock, the radio station that has supported Creed, the fans, nor do we appreciate his disregard for the truth. Furthermore, we don't appreciate his lack of responsibility for his own actions and his attempts to deflect blame with criticism of us and our fans." On Wednesday, Fred Durst responded with a much more succinct statement: "What I said about Creed I meant; the starting time of our New York show had nothing to do with my comments. I bet some fans who have tried to meet them would agree. "I don't ever care about what other people in the business say. Our fans know what we're about, and that's all that matters to me." |
