Girl On the Road
I was on my way to a gig in Mississippi from Austin, Texas and was passing through east Texas and through Louisiana in the late summer and all the flowers were blooming on the sides of the road. I had a good drivin' buzz and the fat one in my hand kept going out as I'd forget I was even holding it, when this great looking girl kind of passed my on the road. This is not the first time that has happened through the years, but it struck me kind of hard that I should be writing about that elusive "girl on the road". I immediately pulled over on the side of the road, turned on the emergency flashers, pulled up the hood to look like I had an excuse to be pulled over and immediately began to write this song. It flowed like the long empty roads of west Texas. After getting the words down, I immediately pulled to the next rest stop and wrote the music. I usually carry a tape recorder with me when I'm driving just in case some song idea may come into my head but this one hit me like a ton of bricks and I'm glad that I had the presence of mind and the discipline to just stop and get my idea down on paper before it slipped away and this is how it turned out. I'm sure she's out there on the road somewhere tonight.
