| Relay for Life Durham County May 22-23, 2004 Jordan High School |
| Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's signature fundraising event. It is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for reserach and programs of the American Cancer Society. During the 24-hour event, teams of 8-10 people come together to join the fight against cancer. Because Relay for Life is a community gathering rather than an athletic event, anyone and everyone can participate. Teams form from businessess, clubs, families, friends, hospitals, churches, schools and service organizations. Teams all share a common desire- eliminating cancer. In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon, took the first step of his 24-hour walk/run around a track in Tacoma, Washington. He raised $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society as a one-man-team. The following year, 19 teams joined Dr. Klatt and Relay for Life was born Last year, there were over 3,300 Relays nationwide with over 200 million people participating- 450,000 of which were survivors. Last year $245 million was raised to battle and defeat cancer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated. |
