Superbowl Pre-Lube

Nine brave souls appeared at Shoeless Joe’s in Ajax for Superbowl appertifs. Just your average rainy, soaking-wet, windy winter day.

At the chalk-talk it became all too clear that the trail, laid with loving care by Aims Low in chalk and coloured flour, was a wash-out. This was going to be a mostly live-hare event. There were no strollers today as the little people were too smart to go out on a day like this.

Aims Low started us north on Westney Road along a grassy, now marshy, boulevard. Everyone had soaked shoes by the first half mile. Crossing under Highway 401, we were sideswiped by heavy winds, rain, and some frozen sleet that peeled the skin off your hide. It was going to be a real treat today.

Most of the pack ran along with the hare, while a few less intelligent hashers, like Humpday and Bumming A Fag, ran ahead with minimal instruction looking for any trace of the marks. There were a lot of parkland trails through Ajax that were probably quite scenic under better circumstances, but they were mostly shiggy this particular afternoon. On one of these little hills, Bumming A Fag took a wrong turn while looking for trail, and when he was called ‘on back’ came sliding down on his backside. Humpday coerced Stuporman into ‘showing his stuff’ by running up a more substantial hill a bit later, only to find that Stupes had missed an arrow. Once again, Stuporman was a victim of run harder, not smarter.

Miles and miles and miles later, in the driving rain, we finally reached the beer check at the Fitz Pub in Pickering Village (in true DUH fashion, the downtown of Ajax is named Pickering Village – and that was before the nuclear plant was built nearby). Nine hardy hashers proceeded to try to get as wet on the inside as on the outside. After a couple of pitchers of ale, we gathered our wits and headed back out into the rain to continue our day of self-inflicted insanity.

Upon arriving back at the On In at Shoeless Joe’s most changed into some drier attire and we circled up to thank the hare for the short?? and pleasurable?? trail. Shadow had measured us at over 8 km, and this was a pre-lube? At least it was over. Bumming A Fag, Aims Low, Zig Zag and Stuporman all received down-downs for attending all DUH3 runs so far. Bumming got another for his fall on the hill. Dead End got a couple for, well, being Dead End. Backdoor Buzz, Johnny Cockring, Humpday and Shadow all got down-downs so that no one would be left out.

This would be a great area to visit again…
