WORTH FIGHTING FOR

Chapter 16 – A Night To Remember  (PG-13 Version)

“That was some punch Dad!” Duo laughed as his father handed him a foil blanket to out on, to warm Duo up.

“Sally said you need to wear this.”

Duo nodded his thanks as he wrapped it around his shoulders and hugged it tight to his cold body. The door opened and Devalin strolled in from having just had his nose fixed, he looked moody and a white band-aid covered the bridge of his nose. He sat down on the other side of the relatives room to the one Duo was on.

“You walk into a door there Devalin?” Duo asked, chuckling lightly as Devalin glared at him. “You need to learn to look where you are going!”

“And you need to learn to shut your mouth Maxwell… before I shut it for you.” Devalin snarled.

Duo laughed again as Solo handed him a plastic mug full of hot coffee.

Duo cursed as he found it near impossible to hold the mug without spilling the drink. Ever since entering the boiling hot hospital a few hours ago, Duo’s freezing cold body hadn’t stopped shaking. It was a sign that Duo had been outside, wet and cold, for too long.”

“Something wrong with you Maxwell?” Devalin asked and although he ment it to sound cruel, his voice betrayed his concern and Duo was once again remained that Devalin loved him.

“Just a bit cold, I’ll be in fine in an hour or two.”

Devalin gave a nod at Duo’s words before turning to his own mug of coffee which Duo had asked Solo to get him. He thanked Solo who was staring at him, thinking hard.

Solo couldn’t work Devalin out, one minute Devalin was threatening to kill Duo, the next he was making sure Duo was alright. He shrugged, there were too many levels to Devalin: you manage to figure one out just to discover another one underneath it.

“Why are you doing this?” Solo asked, still staring at Devalin.

Devalin looked up.

“Pardon?”

“Why are you causing Duo so much pain? Is his crime against you that bad?”

“He killed my brother!” Devalin snapped. “And that is an unforgivable act.”

“It was in self defence.” Solo pointed out and Devalin growled.

“Forget it father.”

Solo turned to Duo and he saw Duo give a shaky sigh and wipe at his eyes. He felt so helpless as he stared at his son’s condition. Solo sat down beside Duo and helped him to drink his coffee.

Slowly time passed of them sitting in silence. Duo had drifted off into a light sleep and Devalin was watching the boy slumber out of the corner of his eye.

“Do you love him?”

Devalin jumped at the soft question.

“Pardon?”

“I asked you if you love him?”

“Who?”

Solo pushed a piece of hair out of Duo’s face and the boy mumbled something in his sleep.

“Duo.”

Devalin froze, his body became as rigid as a plank.

“No.”

Solo studied Devalin before continuing. “I think you do.”

“You think wrong!” Devalin snarled. “If I loved him, which I don’t, why would I be doing this?!”

“To kill the feelings you have for him.”

“You are mistaken.”

Solo sighed. “It must be hard to love someone and not have them return the feelings. My best friend, Heero’s father once loved me, and I never knew. I love Helen and it was so hard for him to continue to be my friend. He must have been in so much pain.” Solo spoke softly.

Devalin looked up and over at Solo who had moved to stand by the window, looking out into the night.

“If I was in his shoes, I probably would of done something similar to what you are doing now.”

“Mr Maxwell, yes, I did love Duo, but he killed my brother and no matter what I feel I will avenge my brother’s death or die trying.”

“So one way or another, someone is going to die?”

Devalin gave a nod. “Yes.”

“But…”

There was a sharp knock at the door, which woke Duo up as Sally entered.

“Good news.” She greeted them. “Heero’s fever has broken and he is awake. He’s will be alright for tomorrow as long as he doesn’t move about too much.” She warned Devalin.

“Can I see him Sal-Chan?” Duo asked, his eyes wide and puppy like.

“Of course you can Duo. I’m off home, I’ll be back in the morning to sigh the release forms. Solo, can I offer you a lift home?”

Duo hugged Sally before running out the door.

Solo gave a smile. “Thank you, it would be nice.”

“Doctor Sally?”

“Yes?”

“Will it be alright if I stay the night here?” Devalin asked.

“Of course, just don’t wonder about.”

Devalin thanked her as Solo and her walked out, the door closing behind them.

Devalin felt anger boil up as he recalled the way Duo had run to see Heero and he moved to the door and opened it, determined to find the American preventer and force him away from Heero.

Heero was awake, like Sally had said, when Duo entered the room. He looked up as the door quietly shut.

“Hi.” Duo smiled, hugging his lightweight warm blanket closer to his skin.

“Hey.” Heero replied and Duo moved to the bedside.

“How you feeling?”

“I’ve been better.”

“You’ve certainly looked better Yuy.” Duo joked, his eyes flicking over Heero. Heero was dressed in the flimsy plastic hospital gown, his hair was sticking in all directions and his skin was very pale, and his lips were a dry pink instead off the normal rosy red. But his eyes were still a deep prussian blue colour that shone at Duo.

“That bad huh?” Heero whispered but Duo shook his head.

“No, you are still as beautiful as you are always.”

Duo turned his head, removing Heero from his vision as the regret of his decision to run three years ago hit him.

“Duo?” Heero asked, his body to weak to move to grab the boy’s hand.

“I’m…”

“Don’t.” Heero cut him off and Duo swung his head round to met Heero’s eyes. “We’ve been there before.”

Duo gave Heero a wide world smashing, award winning smile.

“So, what have you been up too?”

“I’ve been kidnapped.”

“Before that. You know I’ve been with the Ps, what have you been doing?”

Duo hopped up on to the side of the bed and he held Heero’s hand as Heero began to tell him about his university life and for a while it was easy to forget where they were and why they were where, and to forget all about the danger that hung over their heads like a sharp guillotine ready to fall.

“That’s about it.” Heero concluded and Duo smiled.

“I’m glad you’ve been happy.”

Heero chose not to point out that he hadn’t been happy because he hadn’t had Duo with him. Heero just gave a sigh and closed his eyes, he hadn’t talked like that for ages but Duo had always been able to make him do things that he didn’t normally do.

“Duo?”

“I know what happened between you and Devalin but I was wondering if you had… well… if you’ve been with anyone else since us?”

Duo gave his own sigh and let go of Heero’s hand.

“After Devalin, me and Wufei took comfort from each other.”

“Oh.”

“No, don’t get me wrong Heero, it wasn’t like that. When Wufei lost Trieze and Zechs, I was there for him, I held him when he cried and I replaced some of what Trieze and Zechs had given him. After Devalin Wufei took a place at my side to keep me sane. Without Wufei, I don’t know what I would of done. I really hated myself, I just wanted it all to end. And then one night, I was laying in bed with Wufei, we hadn’t done anything, we just held each other, and I asked him about sex and what it felt to have someone make love to you. Wufei reminded me that I had once had the perfect relationship but I had let it slip through my fingers because of my father but it had been taken away from me by Devalin. I could no longer could remember what it felt like to be with you and I cried. Wufei held me and wiped the tears away and one thing lead to another. I don’t regret it but it didn’t mean as much as it would of done if it was with you.”

Duo turned his head to look at Heero, who was regarding him with stern blue eyes.

“Duo.” He whispered and he raised a hand to touch Duo’s cheek. “Ai shiteru.”

Duo lent into the touch and gave a sweet smile. “I love you always.” He replied bending down to place a delicate kiss on Heero’s lips.

Duo laid down beside Heero, his arm wrapped around Heero’s wrist and they held each other close and for a long while they remained like that.

A pair of eyes stared through the glass window of the hospital at the couple on the bed, his hand rested on the doorknob but as he watched the two fall into slumber, he let go and backed away, letting them spend a final night together.
