WORTH FIGHTING FOR
Chapter 13 - Cobwebs
“Well how do I look Doc?”
“You are, as always, in perfect
health.”
The Preventers had an on-site
doctor’s surgery, which was run by one Doctor Sally Poo.
“But?” Duo raised an eyebrow at
her. She had agreed to stand by on site when Duo went to meet Devalin, Duo
didn’t want anything serious to happen to Heero and had forced Sally into
agreeing to save Heero if he got hurt.
“You have a high blood pressure.
You are too stressed, you shouldn’t really be doing this sort of thing today.”
Duo pulled his shirt on and did
the buttons up. “I have no choice Sally, if I don’t show up, he’ll kill Heero.”
“Just take things easy, don’t
try and rush into anything, think things though, don’t do anything irrational.”
Duo chuckled. “I’ll be fine
Sally, I’m in your safe hands.” Duo jumped down from the bed and flicked his
long hair over his shoulder.
Sally smiled back.
“I’m ready to go when you are
Duo, just buzz me and I’ll be there.”
Duo nodded. “Thank You.”
Sally watched him go with a
heavy heart; there was two hours before Duo would be leaving to met Devalin and
she had seen the devastation that Devalin had done before to Duo. As the door
shut she turned and grabbed her phone, she had a horrible feeling that she
would need more than just her medical bag and she wasn’t willing to watch
anyone die.
* * *
Mike and Quatre were sitting in
the front seats of Quatre’s car. They were waiting for Duo, Trowa and Wufei to
appear so they could get going.
“Mike?”
“Yes?”
“What do you think Devalin has
planned for Duo?”
“I don’t know but I don’t like
it one bit.”
“Me neither. I’m glad Duo and
Solo are talking again, I would hate for anything to happen to Duo and he was
to um… well you know, and Solo would hate himself for not saying sorry or
goodbye to his son.”
“Quatre I couldn’t care less
about Solo, he is still a homophobic piece of shit to me and I don’t want him
to be part of my life, but I will stand by Duo till the end and Duo knows
this.”
Quatre sat there playing with
the gold eternity ring on his finger.
“Quatre,” Mike lent over and
placed his hand on top of Quatre’s to still the movement of it. “Duo has sworn
that he will do anything to save Heero, nothing can stop that kind of passion
and love. Duo knows that Heero is worth fighting for (1) and he wont let
anything bad happen to Heero while he is alive. I always have sworn that I will
protect Duo from Devalin and if, by so unfortunate tragedy, Duo does die, then
I will protect Heero in the same way that Duo wants to.”
“I know don’t what to do,”
Quatre sighed. “I feel so useless. I can’t help Duo or Heero and they are both
my friends, true I haven’t spoken to Heero in three years but I grew up with
them both and I don’t want to see anything bad happen to them yet, I might and
if I do, I’ll be powerless to help.”
“We are a team Sandrock.” Mike
said. “No matter which one of us is on the stage, no matter which one of us is
pulling the trigger on the gun, no matter which one of us is on the mission, no
matter what that mission is, we all know that the other members of the team are
right behind us and they are supporting us. We’ll help each other out mentally
if we are not helping them out physically. Understand me?”
“It doesn’t stop me worrying.”
Quatre whispered as the back doors open and the other three members of the SPU
slide into the car.
“Ready Deathscythe?” Mike asked,
glancing up into the mirror to study Duo, who sat there, hands clenched together
and lips pressed firmly against each other. Duo gave a sharp nod and Mike
started the car up.
Quatre twisted in his seat and
he reached out and grabbed Duo’s hand. Duo looked at it confused.
“We’re beside you all the way
D-Chan.”
Duo gave a small smile.
“I’m fine Q-man, I’m ready to
kick Devalin’s butt.”
Mike gave a silent sigh at the
tone of Duo’s voice, it was such a fake tone and everyone in the car knew it
but chose to ignore it.
Quatre turned back to the front
and he took a very deep breath.
“Wufei?” Duo asked, his voice
suddenly not sounding so confident. Wufei nodded and Duo lent up to him and
whispered in his ear.
“I promise.” Wufei whispered
back, his large black eyes sprinkled at Duo with worry and love.
“Thank you.”
The rest of the car journey
passed in silence.
* * *
The SPU arrived at Regence Hall
at ten minutes to twelve and together they strolled into the building, Duo at
the front leading the way down the corridor to the great hall. He threw open
the door and marched in, his head held high and his violet eyes flashed with
some emotion that couldn’t be named.
Devalin spun round from his stop
standing on the stage and he looked at Duo, suddenly fearfully of the raw look
in Duo’s eyes.
“Preventers.” Devalin cried,
composing himself and spreading his arms in greeting. “So glad you could come.”
“The pleasure is all mine
Devalin.” Duo hissed.
“Why is that, Preventer
Deathscythe?”
“Because I get the enjoyment of
watching you die.”
* * *
Up, on the balconies, high above
the great hall floor, sat one guard and one Heero Yuy. The guard had a gun
resting on his lap and his eyes were fixed on Heero and it made Heero squirm
uncomfortably, he really didn’t like the gleam in this man’s eyes.
Yet when Devalin announced the
Preventers arrival, Heero stood up and lent over the balcony to see them, the
guard watching him, didn’t try and stop his movements, he just continued to
stare at Heero and Heero got the creepy feeling that the guy was staring at his
butt.
Heero was too high up to hear
what was being said by the men far below him but he could make out the music
that was beginning to play. Again Heero shivered, it was a joyful tune but he
had once heard it while watching a horror movie and according to the movie
every time you heard this music, you should run as fast as you can because if
you don’t, you would die. He recalled the ending to the movie, the dead body
hanging from a ceiling in a steel factory with the boy’s eyes ripped out, most
likely through the back of his head because the bird-monster that had killed
him, then moved behind the dead body and looked straight through the boy’s
empty eye sockets at the camera to reveal the boy’s eyes on the bird-monster’s
face. (2)
Heero pinched himself to force
himself to pay attention to the scene below. Duo had just walked onto the stage
and was standing about a meter from Devalin. Devalin was smiling and talking,
Heero made a wild but correct guess that Devalin was telling him what the task
was.
It was a simple test, so Devalin
had informed Heero when he had brought both Heero and guard up to highest
balcony in the building that overlooked the great hall, all Duo had to do was
work out which door would lead him to Heero. Sounds simple enough but someone
had forgotten to tell Heero that there were over 100 doors in this place and at
least 20 of them lead to the balconies.
“He has an hour to find you.”
The guard spoke, standing up and moving so his chest was an inch away from
Heero’s back. “If he doesn’t find you by then, I get to do what I want with
you.” At this point the man pressed himself against Heero, making his aroused
state very obvious to Heero as he pressed his arousal against the small of
Heero’s back, alerting Heero to the fact that he was small compared to the
tallness of the man behind him. “As long as if end with you with a bullet
through your head.”
Heero snorted. “Is that before
or after you rape me?”
“Both.” The man purred, his
mouth began to lick and suck at Heero’s neck.
“Gross.” Heero muttered before
shoving the man away from him. “But you aren’t allowed to touch me until the
hour is up. I’m been promised no harm.”
A gunshot rang into the air and
Heero spun back to see Duo turn and walk away.
“The task begins and so does
your final hour.” The man whispered and Heero turned to him and smirked.
“If that is the best you can do,
I have nothing to worry about.” (3)
* * *
Duo headed out back into the
main entrance hall before he left himself sigh in defeat. He was so crap at
things like this, he could never work out riddles, and he was shown once again
that Devalin was thorough when he gathered information on him and his team. He
hissed in annoyance as he stared at the piece of paper in his hand. It made no
sense what so ever to him, part from it pointed towards where Heero was being
kept, somewhere high in the building which did him no good because there were 6
towers, and more than a handful of balconies in just the great hall alone, not
to mention the dozen or so mini halls that were dotted around the large old
building, and then of course there could be a clue in the rest of the riddle
which said that everything he was being told was a lie and therefore Heero was
below in one of the five cellars.
Duo run a hand nervously through
his long bangs that fell over his eyes and scanned the paper again.
“AH!” He snarled.
“Just take things easy, don’t
try and rush into anything, think things though, don’t do anything irrational.”
Sally’s voice rang through his head and Duo once again looked at the paper and he read each line slowly and carefully.
“You’re trying to find your lovely prince, all you
have to do is follow this.
He's trapped like Rapunzal, at the highest point.
At place you once were before, a place that holds dread and so much more.
Will you save him? Or will he die?
It all depends on the way time flies.
Only an hour, will you have.
Remember this love comes and goes,
as well as death. Which one will you find in your love's grasp?
I'll only give you one last hint,
he's in the place where he was last seen,
Trapped high above like a princess in tower,
And the only way to get to him, is to go through a place long and great.
How long shall your love last,
it all depends on you.
Will you be able to find him before the time is up,
Or fail and perish like him.” (4)
Duo
chewed on his lip.
“Ok,
come on Maxwell, most of this is easy. You can do this, just take one line at a
time.”
Duo
nodded at his own words and began to pace the floor as he muttered to himself.
“You’re
trying to find your lovely prince”… ok, that’s easy, my task is to find Heero.
“All you have to do is follow this”… again, easy my task, the clues to Heero’s
whereabouts is in the riddle. “He’s trapped like Rapunzal, at the highest
point”… ok, the highest point, is the Clock Tower at the front of the building,
but that’s too obvious right? So, he’s somewhere up high. “At place you were
once before”… I buggered already.”
Duo
screwed his nose up and re-read the line.
“At
place you were once before, a place that holds dread and so much more”… um…”
Duo nibbled on his bottom lip. “Ok, lets leave that one. “Will you save him? Or
will he die?”… If I fail the task then Heero dies, great, I feel so much more
confident now that I know that!”
Duo
sighed again.
“It
all depends on the way time flies. Only an hour, will you have”… so I have an
hour in which to save Heero and if I don’t save him he dies. This is pretty
easy really. “Remember this love comes and goes”… well Devalin once said that
he loved me, now he is trying to kill me, so that makes sense. “As well as
death. Which one will you find in your love's grasp?” Easy, if I save him he
lives, if I don’t he dies, the choice is up to me as to what will happen. “I'll
only give you one last hint,” That’s nice of you Dev. “He's in the place where
he was last seen,” So, he must be here right, in Regence Hall, can’t you give
me useful hints? “Trapped high above like a princess in tower,” Already had one
like this and I worked that out. He’s somewhere high. “And the only way to get
to him, is to go through a place long and great.” I don’t think there is a place
like that here is there? Shit I wish I had a map! “How long shall your love
last, it all depends on you. Will you be able to find him before the time is
up, Or fail and perish like him.” Simple message, if I fail we both die.”
Duo
sat down on the floor.
“Ok,
the clues are. One, he’s somewhere high. Two, I have an hour… no wait…” Duo
looked at his watch. “I have 40 minutes. Three, He’s in Regence Hall. That’s
it?! I’m screwed.”
Duo
gave a half-hearted sigh.
“He’s
in a place where he was last seen… wait, wait, wait, wait, wait…”
Duo
suddenly jumped up and run back into the great hall. Everyone looked round to
watch him jump across seats until Duo reached the stage. Duo knelt down on the
stage at the place where a few weeks ago he had picked up his old cross.
“Heero
was last seen here by Relena on the day he was kidnapped.” Duo straighten up.
“It
took you twenty minutes to work that out.”
“So
he’s in the tower above the Great hall?!”
“Do
you really think I’m going to say yes to that?!”
“If
you were nice, you would.”
“I’m
not nice.”
“My
point exactly.”
“You
have your spark back.”
Duo
smirked at Devalin.
“Hai,
hai!”
Then
Duo was gone again, his feet pounding against the floorboards causing dust to
raise from it and he hurried to the old staircase that lead the way up into the
East Tower that rested directly above the Great Hall.
* * *
“Your
boyfriend is thick.” The guard laughed as he watched Duo climbed into the old
tower.
Heero
rolled his eyes at the man before turning back to watch Duo disappeared
upstairs, feeling his own heart drop a few inches as Duo ran away from his
hiding place.
* * *
“AHHHHH,
he’s not here!” Duo kicked at a box and then coughed violently as a dust cloud
rose and he breathed it in.
“At
place you once were before, a place that holds dread and so much more…” Duo
muttered. “I dread this morning coming here so this is the place I dread, no, I
don’t dread here, I dread being with Devalin so therefore Heero would be within
Devalin’s sight range, and he’s up high, so he would be…” Duo spun on his heel
causing more dust to unsettle but he stormed down the creaking staircase until
he reached the door to the seating balcony and he tugged it open.
Below
him, Mike watched Duo as Duo sprinted across the balcony before disappearing
into another staircase.
Duo
threw himself up the staircase and onto another level. His violet eyes scanned
it before regretting it and moving on up towards the next level. Four levels he
passed before he entered a long corridor, which was full of broken cobwebs. Duo
jogged down the corridor trying to regain control of his breathing as he threw
open the door to come face to face with the barrel of a gun.
“Told
you so.”
* * *
“20
minutes left.”
“He’s
worked it out.” Heero snapped and the guard spun round to face the door.
“We’ll
see.” He pulled his gun out just in time to see the door open and a mucky,
dusty Duo stood there, with cobwebs caught up in his long hair.
“Told
you so.” Heero sung, crossing his arms over his chest and smirking at the
shocked guard.
“Damn.”
The guard muttered lowering his weapon and he grabbed Heero’s arm. “You
completed the first task Preventer Deathscythe. Compared to the others, this
one was a walk in the park.”
“I’ve
never had a walk quite like that before.” Duo replied.
“Come
down with me Preventer and Devalin will inform you of your task.”
“Lead
the way.” Duo smiled.
* * *
“Well
done Maxwell, didn’t think you had it in you.”
“You
shouldn’t underestimate me.”
Devalin
smirked and he took hold of Heero’s hands. “No.” Devalin muttered, staring deep
into Heero’s eyes. “I shouldn’t, not that I did. You found this task harder
than I thought you would. I can’t wait till tomorrow. Be at the boating lake at
2 pm. I would advise you not to bring any sharp objects or wear any heavy
clothes. MEN MOVE OUT!” Devalin yelled the order and within a minute there was
no trace that Devalin had even been there at all.
The
five preventers stood there quietly.
“One down, four more.” Duo sighed deeply and he tried
to smile. “One step closer.”
Mike
nodded and placed a hand gently on Duo’s shoulder.
“You
did well.”
“Thanks.”
Mike
gave Duo’s shoulder a squeeze before reaching into Duo’s hair and pulling out a
rather large spider and a long thin string of cobweb. He flicked the spider
away before dusting his hands and he walked away. Quatre came and stood next to
his friend.
“Um
Duo?”
“Yes
Q?”
“Can
I give you some advice?”
Duo
raised an eyebrow at the blonde dressed in green.
“Sure?”
“Take
a bath. You stink!”

My Ex says the title of every book and film is
said at least once in that film/book. Well here it is for this fic.
(2)
Jeepers Creepers, I hate that movie, it was such
a bad movie but it was really quite scary. I did watch it at half twelve at
night in a dark room with fourteen of my friends and it made us all jump, I hated
the ending, I really wanted the girl to die but she didn’t. It was very scary
up to the point they showed you that the killer wasn’t human, then it became
funny and scary. Worst Horror Flick I’ve ever seen. Don’t ask what this has to
do with the fic, coz it doesn’t. I just thought I would add it ^_^ .
(3)
OMG, how OOC have I made Heero? Ok, I’m taking
from the tv series here that Heero isn’t afraid to die plus he does truly
believe that Duo is going to save him so he doesn’t think he’s going to die.
I’m sorry for the OCC!!!
