WORTH FIGHTING FOR
Heero
groaned as he woke, everything hurt. Devalin had made sure that Heero would
regret stabbing him. Heero smiled, he had made Devalin lose the control that he
needed, the control that made Devalin feel safe. Devalin had never been pushed
to the edge before… yes he has… Heero’s conscious brain pointed out, he lost it
to Duo, Duo made him lose control and when Devalin loses control he makes
mistakes. That was Devalin’s one weakness, the need to be in control.
Heero’s smile turned into a
smirk.
Good Guys 1
Bad Guys 0
But as Heero sat up, he winced
in pain and was forced to remember the number that Devalin had done to him in
his rage and anger.
The score that Heero had just
made was wrong.
It was one a-piece.
Heero scowled at himself, he was
starting to sound like a 15 year old Duo.
“Feeling well?” Devalin’s voice
asked and Heero jumped slightly and looked around.
Devalin had just walked in, a
small smile playing on his thin lips.
Staring at the face of the man
that was causing him and Duo so much pain, Heero decided that he wouldn’t speak
another word. Somewhere in the back of his mind, it registered that doing this
was very childish and kind of stupid but Heero ignored the voice and refused to
open his mouth and speak.
Devalin waited for Heero to
speak, to reply, when he didn’t Devalin raised an eyebrow and looked directly
at Heero.
“Giving me the silent treatment?
What have I done to deserve that?”
Heero just sat there.
“Oh well.” He sighed and he sat
down on the end of the bed and looked at Heero in the same way a father would
look at his son when his son was in trouble. “While you play the brat, I’ll
tell you my plans for the next week and a half. We, are moving tomorrow, closer
to the city where I will spend 4 days setting up the tasks. In five days time
we will see just how much Duo really loves you. Not that it will do you any
good.”
Devalin stood up and strolled
over to the door, he opened it and looked back.
“You’ll both be dead in ten
days. Enjoy your time left.”
And then he was gone.
Heero sat there, half covered by
the blankets, his fists were clenched together and he forced himself to relax.
The palms of his hands were bleeding from where his nails have been digging in,
he watched silently as the blood slide down his golden skin until it fell from
him to the blankets.
* * *
When Duo entered the Special
Core’s office on the top floor of the Preventers Building the late in the
afternoon of the day after his meal with Devalin and Heero, he surprised to
find his father there, shaking Mike by the collar of his shirt and demanding to
see his son.
“I ain’t your son anymore.” Duo
barked a greeting. Solo dropped Mike and spun to face Duo.
“I need to talk to you.” Solo
said, suddenly looking very awkward.
Duo shrugged his coat off. “So
talk.”
Solo glanced at Mike who was
glaring daggers at him.”
“In private.”
Duo sighed and pushed opened the
door to the interview room. “Go in and wait. I’ll be there soon.”
Solo entered, his eyes eyeing up
the glass mirror on the wall in front of him and he sat down.
Ten minutes later Duo entered
with two mugs of coffee. Silently he passed one to Solo and sat down, nursing
his own cup between his hands.
“Well?” Duo asked taking a sip.
“Um… I talked to Relena last
night.” Solo began. “She told me what happened at the restaurant. She was very
upset about it.”
Duo snorted, but said nothing.
“She told me what you were
planning on doing.”
“You’re not going to stop me.” Duo
glared, his voice flat and left no room for decision on it.
“No, she told me the reason as
to why you were doing it. I understand you are doing it for more than just
duty.”
Duo lent back on his chair and
he study his father with cool violet eyes. He had never seen his father look
nervous before, his father’s blue eyes were fixed on the floor and his father
was playing with his wedding ring. His mug of coffee had been put down on the
table.
“I don’t get you.” Duo said
softly.
“Well, I’ve been talking to
people.” Solo said, reaching out for his coffee, his mouth suddenly felt very
dry.
“Most people talk to people.”
Duo replied.
“Be quiet and let me talk.” Solo
snapped.
“Well talk sense.” Duo snapped
back.
“I came to apologise.”
“Apologise? For what?”
“The way I’ve acted.”
“And that makes it all better?”
“No. Duo, I admit, I’ve been
stupid. I forgot what I was like when I was younger.”
“This isn’t a phrase.”
“I know it isn’t.”
There was silence.
“Duo, when Relena told me that
you were willing to give your life in order to save Heero’s, I realised then
that… gender doesn’t matter and that it’s what the heart feels that counts.”
“Took you long enough.” Duo
snorted again.
“I want you to have this.” Solo
handed Duo a navy box.
Duo slowly opened it, inside was
the ring that was given to the Maxwell’s Brides. It was an engagement ring, the
one that had been past down through many generations.
“I know that sorry doesn’t cover
what I have done. But… I hope in the years to come I will be able to make it up
to you.”
Duo just stared at the ring.
“If Heero makes you happy then
I’m happy.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to lose
you again.”
Duo looked up at his father in
time to see his father wipe tears from his eyes.
“I want you to be part of our
family again. I want you and Heero to be part of the Maxwell family.”
Solo then turned and left the
room, he walked pass Quatre and Mike who were talking quietly and he left Duo
sitting there, staring at the empty room without really seeing.
“Duo?” Quatre stuck his head in
to the room and he looked at Duo sitting dazed.
“My father.” Duo muttered, his
hand closing the lid to the ring and he looked up. “My father.” He muttered
again, his hand holding the ring box tightly.
“Your father what?” Quatre asked confused by it all.
Duo just smiled and then ran out
of the room.

Solo had just opened the door to
the car when he heard footsteps behind him and then the door he was holding was
slammed shut. He blinked in surprise at the hand before moving to look into the
violet eyes that stared at him.
“Why the sudden the change of
Heart?”
“Change of Heart?” Solo laughed.
“I haven’t had a change of heart Duo, I still disagree with you on the subject
of gay men, but I am willing to accept that it is apart of you, and for that
reason I am willing to overlook it.”
“Overlook it?” Duo growled.
“It’s a big part of me to just overlook.”
Solo sighed. “I know, but I have
accepted that part of you. It’s taken me a while, but I believe that I
understand somewhat. Both you and your sister are so alike and I love you both,
so much that I don’t want you to be angry with me if you died. I want you to be
with us, no matter who you love.”
Duo pulled a face. “Would it
help you if I dressed in a pink skirt and asked you to call me Duet?”
Solo laughed. “Let’s go grab
dinner.”
“Ok.” Duo reached over and
grabbed his father’s keys. “I’m driving.”
“Why am I going to regret this?”
Solo asked sliding into the passenger seat.
Duo just laughed.

“So are things ok between the
two of you?” Relena asked that night as she sat around the large dining table
in the Maxwell house where for the first time in ages they were having a proper
Maxwell dinner with all the members present.
“It’s a small step Lena.” Duo
said, his eyes met his mothers and then his fathers. “But we’ll get there.”
“It’s good to have you home
Duo.” Helen said, her eyes glowed with unshed tears.
Duo looked down at the table.
“It might be over soon.”
The maid than came into the
room.
“Sir, My Yuy is here with his
family.”
“Do bring them in.” Solo
gestured and in walked the Yuy Family.
April took one look at Duo
before she threw herself on her husband crying.
Helen looked shocked by this but
Duo stood up smoothly, he stood up tall and for once he looked like his father,
ready for business.
“Mrs Yuy, April.”
She looked at Duo with her dark
prussian eyes.
“Yes?”
“I promise you, I will do all in
my power to keep Heero alive.”
Odin looked across at Solo.
“Your daughter finally talked some sense into you did she?”
Solo blushed. “I learnt that
gender doesn’t control love, I was remember of a certain night 25 years ago.”
Odin looked at Solo, his eyes
shone with an emotion that run deeper than friendship and trust.
“Hey, what happened 25 years
ago?” Dorothy asked, sitting down at the table.
“You are too young to understand
Dorothy.”
“Everyone, please.”
The two families turned to look
at Duo.
“I’m not good at giving
speeches, um, I’ve accepted my father’s apology of the way he treated me when
he discover that I am gay, but now he’s given me his blessing and I’m no longer
going to be running away from, well, my feelings and my family. I grew up with
Heero, I still love him and after last night, I know he still loves me. For
those of you who don’t know, the reason Heero was kidnapped was because of me.
I have history with Devalin, not nice history but history none the least. The
Preventers were sent a message from Devalin today, I’m giving into his plans.
I’m doing what he wants me to do. But I um… kinda lost for words now. I
promise, I will do everything in my power to bring Heero back to you.” Duo took
April’s hand. “I’ve lost Heero once due to my father and now that I have my
father’s blessing, I don’t plan on losing him again especially now that I’ve found
him.”
“Duo,” Helen stood up. “We back
you all the way. I don’t want you to do what this Devalin wants you to do, it
sounds dangerous to me. But I trust you, my son, just please, try and come back
in one piece.”
* * *
“Have you really forgiven him?”
“Huh?” Duo looked round at
Relena, he was standing on the balcony that looked over the gardens and she had
joined him there. She bent down to pat the black dog that sat by her master’s
feet.
“Have you really forgiven him?
Dad?”
“I have in my heart, it’s hard to
change your ways when you are set in them and when you have believed them for
so many years. I doubt him still, I guess I’m wanting for him to tell me I’m
disgusting or maybe even hit me again.”
Relena gasped. “When did he hit
you?”
“Long ago, I provoked him.”
~Flashback~
Duo was standing by the lake
beside the family cabin, he was lost deep in thought as he watched the small
fish make tiny ripples on the surface of the lake. He was bought out of his
thinking by the sound of gravel crunching and he looked over his shoulder to
see Solo walking forwards, his eyes staring directly at Duo with a fire in them
that Duo had never seen before. He turned back to look at the lake, speaking
when the noise of footsteps stopped.
“What do you want?” Duo spat
out.
“Now listen son, I know we have
different views on this whole gay subject but you have to see things from my
point of view.”
Duo turned round fully and
glared at his father, who continued to talk to Duo as if he was five years old.
“God designed men to be with
women. The very act that goes on between two men… is wrong.”
Duo screwed his nose up and
almost laughed as his father struggled to find the right words to use.
“And it’s disgusting. Could a
male really enjoy… shoving… his private part up another male’s private part?”
Duo tilted his head to the side
and smirked. “Well you know dad, my biology teacher told me that a man’s
g-spot, is located up his asshole, so anal sex for men, must be pleasureable.”
Duo enjoyed the way his father
blushed and glared, trying to look calm when he was clearly uncomfortable with
the subject and his son was clearly annoying him.
“Duo…”
“And you know,” Duo cut him off,
“When a guy masturbates Dad? Well receiving the worst handjob or blowjob, for
that matter, from a guy, will always be better than the best from a girl.”
“Don’t talk rubbish Duo.” Solo
growled.
“Rubbish? How is it rubbish?”
Duo knew he was pushing it. “Surely if Odin was to give you a hand job it would
be…”
SMACK!
Duo didn’t finish his sentence
as his head snapped to the side and on his right cheek a large red handprint
slowly began to appeared.
“Don’t You Dare!” Solo hissed.
Duo turned his face to look at
his father, his violet eyes glowed with anger.
“Father…”
“NO!” Solo snapped. “You have
gone too far Duo! If I ever hear that you have done anything with a man, or
even thought about it. I will disown you and I will have no son.” Solo hissed
the words slowly, his eyes narrow slits. “Do You Understand Me?”
Duo lowered his eyes, forcing
himself to hold his tongue and not yell out his feelings for Heero at his
father.
“Perfectly.”
“I’m not disgusting enough to
lower myself to your level of talk, but if you ever again suggest that me and
Odin…” Solo choked on his own words. “Well you know what I mean, ever again,
I’ll be forced to knock some sense into you!”
Solo turned on his heel and
strolled away leaving Duo standing there.
“My Level?” Duo yelled out. “You
feel past my level ages ago.”
Solo’s back stiffen but he kept
walking.
“Asshole.”
~End Flashback~
“I never knew.” Relena
whispered.
“It wasn’t something I shouted
out, neither did he.”
“Things are still tense.”
“I’m here. Like I said, we have
taken the first step together to reunite me into the family. We’ll see what
happens when Heero comes back.”
“Is he coming back?”
“How many more times do I have
to say it?”
Relena looked at Duo.
“How much pressure is on you?”
She asked softly.
“What?”
“I remember a care-free jock who
always laughed but you’ve changed. Your job, how much pressure does it put on
you?”
Duo took hold of Relena’s hand.
“I became like this when I left that night, when I got on my bike and drove
away. But Wufei and the guys changed me slowly and I became more like myself.
Relena.” Duo lead her to the bench and sat her down, the dog followed them and
Duo buried his hand deep in her black fur, he took comfort in the shiny
silkiness. “The reason Devalin has Heero is because I killed his brother.”
Relena gasped.
“But, it’s not what you think. I
killed his brother because if I hadn’t then he would kill me.”
Relena closed her eyes, took a
deep breath and opened them to see Duo staring at the black horizon.
“Duo, sweetie, look at me.”
Duo did what she asked.
“Start from the beginning, I wanna know what happened to you, I want to know everything.”
Duo took a deep breath and
began.
