Generation No. 1
1. JOHN1 WHITEMAN was born Bef. 1775, and died Abt. 1835 in Clark County, IN.
He married (1) MARGARET TICHENOR August 15, 1804 in Jefferson Co., KY.
He married (2) SALLY PAGET January 09, 1815 in Jefferson Co., KY, daughter of THEOPHILUS PAGET.

Notes for JOHN WHITEMAN:
John Whiteman apparently died intestate in Clark Co., IN ca 1835. Settlement of his estate can be found in several entries of Clark Co., IN Probate Books C & D. The original entry is dated 11 Jul 1835.
His heirs were listed as Charles Whiteman, Allen Whiteman, William Whiteman, Abigail Whiteman, Eliza Jane Dunham, wife of Calvin Dunham, Berelda Whiteman, John Whiteman, George Whiteman, Ellis O. Whiteman, Stephen Whiteman, Larkin Whiteman, Sarah Bell, wife of James Bell, Anna Whiteman & Jackson Whiteman. Fanny Whiteman held dowrer rights. A guardian ad liticus was appointed on behalf of the minor children, Serilda Ingalton Whiteman, John Whiteman, George Gets(?) Whiteman, Elas Oglesby Whiteman, Stephen Whiteman & Larkin Whiteman. It was mentioned that Sarah, Anna & Jackson Whiteman were not in the area.
On 23 May 1836 petition was continued for process to Scott Co., IN for George Whiteman and to Lawrence Co., IN for Andrew Whiteman.
The estate was ordered to be sold 14 Aug 1837. Final settlement was in Oct 1845.
The dates on John Whiteman's children were taken from Bible records of Caroline Whiteman Miller, daughter of Charles H. Whiteman.
Other hand written accounts by Hester Allen Eilers and Susie Whiteman Long (also descendants of Charles H. Whiteman) have varying dates for the older children. None of these records contain information about Sarah, Andrew Jackson or Anna Maria Whiteman. Because of the inconsistencies in the dates all children but Sarah are being contributed to the union of John Whiteman & Frances Hancock.

News Journal - New Castle, WY - 22 Sep 1911
"As a result of a controversy over a fence in the Thornton vicinity west of here, one man is dead and another badly wounded.
Mr. Whiteman, an old man; aged 74 years, in building his line fence, had set it back some thirty feet in order to allow for a roadway, understanding that his neighbor, Ed Koster, in building his fence would do the same thing, but instead the later insisted on running over the right of way and coupled onto the Whiteman fence, whereupon Whiteman cut the fence down several times.
On Sunday afternoon the two men met at the point of dispute, Whiteman with a single barreled shot gun and young Koster with a rifle, and from the evidence gathered at the coroner's inquest Koster claimed that Whiteman fired at him, the bullet from his shot taking effect in his right breast, whereupon Kosoter returned the fire, the bullet from his gun passing through the old man's body, killing him instantly. The shots frightened the old man's team to such an extent that they started to run away, and notwithstanding his wounded condition, Koster caught them after a short chase and tied them to the fence, after which he worked his way back to his house, where medical aid was secured and at this time the wounded man is getting along as well as could be expected.
The sheriff and coroner were notified and immediately repaired to the scene of the shooting. After investigating, the coroner impanelled a jury and after his examination of witnesses and examination of the premises, returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased came to his death by a gun shot wound fired by Ed Koster and that said shooting was unjustifiable. Koster was placed under arrest and nothing further can be done in the matter until he gets in condition to be brought to preliminary trial." The jury found Ed Koster not guilty, ruling the homicide justifiable as he shot in self defense.

Stephen Whiteman Inquest 21 Nov 1893
Verdict -
I find that Stephen Whiteman came to his death on the evening of the twentieth (20) day of November 1893 at the place of Joseph H. Kraft, 2 miles north of the city of New Albany on the Paoli Pike, while engaged with others in an attempt to steal or kidnap the twelve year old daughter of Joseph H. Kraft from her home.
I further find that his death was caused from gunshot wounds in the abdomen, received at the hands of those who were assisting Mr. Kraft in the protection of his home and famiy, and who were concealed in the barn of Mr. Kraft near his house with the purpose of preventing any such attempts and of apprehending the participators. W. L. Starr, Coroner, Floyd County.

Died - Whiteman, Stephen, November 20th 1893, aged 25 years. Funeral at the resident of his mother on North Side beyond the city limits, Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Friends of the family invited to attend without further notice.
INDIANAPOLIS JOURNAL - "The shooting of a New Albany man who was engaged in a kidnapping raid was a just fate, and the great pity is that his companions and partners were not served likewise. The stealing of children for ransom is not an industry that will ever flourish in this country, an all foolhardy rascals who have an ambition to play the part of banditti Italian fashion, should take warning by the sudden death of Stephen Whiteman and engage in safer occupation. In this instance the leader in the crime was reckess to imbecility. Apparently he had little conception of the gravity of the crime he was committing or he would not have undertaken it after the warning he had from the police and the knowledge that suspicion would at once be directed to him. If his associates are properly dealt with by the law kidnapping cases will not be heard of again in that part of the state." 22 Nov 1893
Stephen Whiteman will be buried at the Leyden graveyard, on the Green Valley Road, Thursday afternoon.
