"I'm getting too old for this broccoli," JD pouted. "Why's that, sport?" Buck couldn't wait to hear what his precocious toddler had thought up now. "It's supposed to make you big and strong, and I already am." Buck tried in vain to hide his amusement. "Tell you what, when that broccoli makes you taller than Vin you can stop eating it. Deal?" "Deal!" an exuberant JD shouted. Buck winked at Vin and put a finger quickly to his lips as he saw realization dawn on the youngster's face. Vin made a valiant effort to wink back at their shared secret.

"Look, Vin, a frog." JD toed the critter with his boot tip to make it hop. Frowning at the animal, Vin set his little cousin straight. "Ain't a frog, JD, that's a toad. A frog lives in the water." "I can fix that," JD smiled, pulling himself onto the ledge of Chris's well. "JD!" Buck yelled, running from the corral and scooping the little boy out of harm's way. "I thought I told you never to go near that well." As he towed the little boy toward the house, JD frowned, "Buck, did I drop my toad down your shirt?"
