MISSION TO MARS

MISSION DIARY - Over View Of The Day

We got up earlier than normal because we had to be at school at 7:45 am, for the launch of our Mission to Mars. Once the coach came we all got on, racing for the back. There wasn’t much to do on the way there so most of us listened to music on our phones or MP3 players. But at least it was comfortable on the coach. As we approached the space centre, we saw a rocket in a huge futuristic ball and most of us began to get excited about the forth-coming mission. We got off the coach and headed for the space centre. As we got there we were introduced to two people called Commando Dave and Commando Asha, who told us what our missions were. We got split up into two groups – Mission control and Mission transporter. After we had finished that we had lunch, and then went to the huge cinema and answered questions about the planets. After that we were able to look around the centre for our selves. Then we went back to the coach and set off to Wakefield. On the way back we had had loads of fun e.g.: filming Rob asleep and looking at the souvenirs we had bought. We returned to school at 4:30pm comfortable in the knowledge we had travelled to and from Mars in one whole day! .

Mission Brief -

We met Commander Mike and Commander Asha and Hannah. They gave us our briefing on what objectives we had to achieve. The first objective was to get Mission Transporter to Mars safely. The second objective was to build a probe to send to one of the moons of mars, Diemos or Phobos. Once we had understood what we had to do, we were split up into two teams, Mission Control and Mission Transporter. We had 8 job areas, Navigation, Medical, Isolation, Life Support, Communications, Data, Probe and Research.

The First Mission-

Mission Transporter went to the space shuttle and Mission Control went to the control room. In Mission Control, Devon and Kayleigh worked on Medical and Life Support. Life Support involved making sure that environmental conditions were inhabitable on the shuttle. There was one event in which we nearly lost Mission Transporter. The oxygen levels on the shuttle had dropped dangerously low. They had less than 5 mins to live. Medical involved testing people’s health, which included Auditory and Visual reactions. Cardiovascular was also necessary to check they were still in good healthy conditions. Unfortunately, one crewmember of Mission Transporter went blind in his right eye and we still do not know the cause of this.

After we had lunch we went and met up with some other schools. We all had to go in a big, dark room. It was like we were at the cinemas but the seats were more comfortable and they were laid back so we were looking up at the ceiling, the only reason for this is because the whole ceiling was the screen. On the right hand side or the seats there was a control panel they was there because there was a quiz that we had to answer the questions so that it would lead us to the information about the planets. The information that I can remember is that Uranus’ core of the planet was like a big diamond then another fact but about the planet Pluto is that Pluto isn’t a planet it is actually a moon that has escaped from the planet Neptune which has eight moons after two of them some how managed to escape. One of the girls who went called Amy Capstick did not like this room because it made her feel sick.
