Soft Pawn

You would have expected a body, probably dried and mummified, with taut, black skin, dressed in burial regalia of the times, unrotted because of the tight air seal.

This is not the sight that meets your eyes, however. To your horror, resting there in the tomb before you, is a very real counterpart to the image made out in relief on the sarcophagus' lid.

It is a black tubular thing, about six feet long and six inches thick. Its surface it pored and pitted, and made out with organic lines giving it the impression of being a root vegetable or something similar. The skin is quivering, ever so slightly, and from this you deduce that it must somehow be alive.

From the pores emerge thin, snakelike tentacles with smoothly slide out into the air, groping blindly from side to side. There are too many of them too count, and you find yourself wondering what you are going to do about it.
