Soft Pawn

Stepping up onto the slight dais around the massive sarcophagus, you are amazed at the quality of the carvings on the lid. Bending down and running a finger along the working, you find that although it is carved from some sedimentary rock, the finish is so smooth you would think it were a brown onyx.

Standing up again, you wonder how you are going to remove the lid to look inside. There is a definite separation, you can fit a fingertip into a cunningly carved crack running down the side, but it looks far too heavy to lift.

You move around to the end away from the wall, and have a look. Something just under the slightly overhanging lid catches your eye... yes, it's definitely a handhold of some kind. Almost as if they wanted you to open it.

Straightening your fingerless gloves, you insert one hand into the comfortable grooves and brace your boots against the tomb side. You tense, and then heave backwards.

The lid shudders, and slides, but only centimetres towards you, before sticking solid. You loosen and catch your breath, before resuming the position and trying again. This time, straining your calves and back to breaking point, you shift the lid a couple of inches.
